Chilima appeals to Malawi citizens not to glorify thieves in power

The country’s estranged Vice-President Saulos Chilima —who is also running mate  to Tonse Alliance presidential torchbearer Lazarus Chakwera  — has asked people in the country to stop clapping hands for thieves  in government who plunder public resources.

Chilima said this Wednesday when he invaded Blantyre rural hinterland with Imbizo campaign tours drumming up support for Chakwera on Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ticket representing Tonse Alliance.

“People should not be glorifying thieves of public resources calling them Biggie or Big Man Wamkulu. We should stop that,” he said.

The whistle stops stretched from Chikuli to Lirangwe via Mombo with MCP Vice President Sidik Mia joining Chilima at Lirangwe.

In his speech, Mia praised Chilima for his humility to put his presidential ambition on hold to support Chakwera this time.

On Thursday and Friday Chilima will storm Thyolo and Mulanje, areas heavily considered as the home ground for the  governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Through out his speeches, Chilima —who is also UTM Party president— lamented that key sectors of the economy such as water development, energy, transportation and agriculture have been neglected for a long time.

Chilima reiterated the alliance’s promises to the electorate, including fighting corruption, revamping the public sector, job creation, economic empowerment of the youth and women and transforming agriculture.

  1. Look who is Talking 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 this is a correct statement Thieves covering Thieves you scratch my Back I will Scratch your Back

  2. Right now Tonse alliance is better than DPP and UDF alliance.Apa akuba za coronavirus. Why is Peter hiding? What is he hiding money or tippex or akukuvoteratu or mukupangiratu maballlot papers ena ofanana ndi original.Paja simumva a DPP.

  3. Only Peter Kuwani has the right to say this. The rest of you people are all exposed in those regards

  4. Joyce Banda – the chief CASHGATER is in TONSE alliance. You are standing with her on the podium. Which corruption are you talking about CHilima?

    1. Tell Joyce Banda to give us back our jet which she sold though dubious means if you are serious! She is the chief cashgator

    1. MCP is a VIOLENT party. Can’t vote for Chakwera who is promoting violence and is adding to more than 30 years of the party’s killings and atrocities. He has sent MCP thugs to chase people from the southern region, created a group of thugs – Nsundwe Boys who have damaged buildings and businesses, destroyed government property and killing policeman, harassing people trying to get government loans and now sending thugs to throw stones at DPP-UDF whistle stop tours.

      1. Ma DPP cadets anapha 3 innocent Tambala family members in Lilongwe posachedwa, so when it comes to violence Mr Duhda, your party of thieves and thugs is number 1

  5. You are one of the thieves. Please show Malawians the invoice from your lawyers regarding the MK 9,7 billion bill that you were supposed to pay and show them your tax returns proving that you could have paid this amount with your Chakwera. Otherwise you are also a thief stealing from government through false declaration of court costs. Akuba inu shut up.

  6. Chilima has lost his touch, his empty speeches are showing how much he has lost the plot. The reason why UTM got over a million votes is because Chilima represented a breath of fresh air from DPP and MCP politics. He was a new era for the youth and a hope for the masses. Instead, he has stooped so low to be swallowed by MCP, after the elections, they will spew him out. They will not need him then like they do now.

  7. British journalist, Richard Dowden has nicely summarised this “big man syndrome” in his book “Africa: Altered States, Ordinary Miracles” and looking at it, it seems it’s a problem enshrined in our culture. Interestingly, a week ago, I was thinking of contributing an article to Nyasa Times wanting to express the same sentiments, with snippets from Dowden’s book, on why we like glorifying leaders who steal from us – whether it would have been published is another story all together.

Richard Dowden mentions that in Africa, when one attains a position of power (usually from a previously disadvantaged position) it is usually a common trait to first consolidate some power and show everyone how important they are. Picture: big car, big house, fat bank account (usually from plundering public resources), and maybe even a couple of wives to boot. Then they indeed like being called “a biggie”, “big man” and all those names to glorify them. Good example he gives is of Uganda’s Idi Amini and former Zaire’s Mobutu Seseseko amongst others.

In present day context “Ana a Dad”, “Ngwazi Mkango wa Malawi”, “Atcheya” etc would nicely fit in this picture (maybe to a lesser extent but we do see parallels).

As a generalization as this may be, it seems to come out now and again on the African continent and a majority of us seem to enjoy glorifying our leaders, yet they do nothing to help develop our countries and eventually improve our lives. I would be hard-pressed to point out an African leader who is really in their position because they want to serve the masses (aside Thomas Sankara despite having taken over in a coup). Paul Kagame (despite some misgivings, and there will always be) in Rwanda seems to be doing a better job.

We need leaders on the African continent, and not people who want fame and glorification.

  8. Tonse Alliance telling us of ushering thieves into government? This is playing with our integrity. Joyce Banda has got a cashgate stigma on her shoulders, Chilima’s integrity is also questionable by receiving free salary without working for it, Chakwera is on record for receiving bribes from Joyce Banda and Simbi, Kachale is on record for stealing hospital beds from Mponela and many others within the Tonse Alliance.A clean politician is perhaps Sinosi Driver Kuwani who is nowhere to winning. The choice remains with us voters to choose which group of thieves is better for election.

    1. Mwini Muzi, your analysis is good and worth noting. Both Alliances comprise bunches of hardcore thieves, so it is up to voters to choose the bunch which is better than the other kkkkkkkkk

  9. Kkkkkk ngati pali mbava no. 1 its SKC. wanyamula kale mipando yekha wawa wopanda wokambirana naye ndiye umbava upose apa chonde a malawi penyani mmaso this one is big crook!

  10. Would he be kind enough just to turn and ask Madam JB where the Jet went? If Mphwiyo has cashgate case would she have no case? Ok if she had no hand then how compitent was she that the country can now start clapping hand for such people behind the alliance. Boma is not just about President , but also his machinery. The team behind Tonse alliance is questionable. They are only preaching about resource distribution but not generation. No country can develop with donations. Let us know where the resouces will come from? Otherwize they are simply power hungry.

    1. In fact Tonse Alliance has everything, Cashgaters (PP + MCP), murderers (MCP + UTM)), liars and pretenders (UTM).

  11. We need more people like this guy. Can’t wait until he visits my homeland Thyolo. I can’t vote for Peter just because we come from the same place. I vote for a brighter future in tonse alliance or utmcp

    1. Kukuyu ankachita kupanga manyumba 4 nthawi imodzi . When they lost everything instantly stopped

  12. SKC ndikatundu apano DPP yayamba kuona yokha kufunikila kwa munthuyu abale ndaledi zisithe tisiye kutamanda munthu just imagine anthu ena tikumawanena ma Biggie lerowa dzulodzulori tawaona ali oliradi

  13. Well I appeal to Malawians not to vote for thieves because once you get them in there they clean the whole place and then we will get cash-gate No.2!

Malawians don’t vote for un disciplined liars who only think about themselves and not Malawi.

  14. but let us glorify thieves that joined the Tonse Alliance, Joyce Banda, Chilima, Kaliati, Sidik Mia, Khumbo Kachali and company. Mbava zokha zokha.
