Chilima mulls over runningmate offer by MCP, storms Njamba

State Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also UTM Party leader  is  considering the offer by Malawu Congress Party (MCP) presidential hopeful Lazrus Chakwera to partner him as his runningmate in the forthcoming fresh presidential elections.

Chilima: UTM presidential hopeful could settle for running mate

Chilima and Chakwera—the duo that secured the landmark judgement by the five-judge panel of the High Court of Malawi sitting as the Constitutional Court that nullified the May 21 2019 presidential election on February 3 2020— have been having discussions on the MCP-UTM alliance.

In the run-up to the annulled presidential election, Chakwera partnered former president Joyce Banda and her People’s Party (PP) as well as the country’s former vice-president Khumbo Kachali and his Freedom Party. The partnership between MCP and the two is still intact.

MCP has said it will take the presidency because of   its numerical strength in Parliament (55 legislators against UTM’s measly four) to claim that it is bigger than UTM and a Head of State should have numbers in parliament to legislate government business.

Chilima is yet to confirm is he is to settle for number two in an MCP-UTM alliance as he  is already vice-president and has been one for five years—a position that comes with a life-long pension.

He is short of getting the most prized position of Presidency, which he has been making it openly.

Mzuzu-based political commentator Emily Mkamanga hoped that, if formed, the MCP-UTM alliance would be different from previous partnerships, saying it would be much stronger to attain its aspirations.

Meanwhile, Chilima is scheduled to hold a public rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre this coming Sunday.

The rally will come barely a week after joint rally of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the United Democratic front (UDF) at the same venue.

The constitutional Court on February 3, 2020 nullified the May 21, 2019 Presidential polls and called for fresh elections within a period of 150 days.

The move has seen various political parties moving around the country wooing voters.

  1. Why call Chilima mbuzi and why threaten him kuti amupha? muatamuphe ndinu muziti MCP yamupha. Leave him , he is a free citizen to make his own choice. When he left AIRTEL did yzou tell him or he made his own decision? I think most people talking the negatives mukudziwa how chilima assisted DPP to be in govt and you are afraid he will make it with Chakwera. When he left his jiob non of you castigated him ndiye wasanduka mbuzi poti wa joina MCP? Let us analyse things with sanity not insanity. Whether his UTM will end or he dies or he is dumped its is his own choice he will not come to eat at your house or beg a lift from you.

  2. All my hopes for a better Malawi are shattered that you are aligning yourselves with this notorious MCP. I had all the hope in you Chilima and not Chakwera. Please revisit your decision bwana.

  3. MCP might have the bigger number of MPs but Chakwera’s leadership is inferior to that of Chilima.

      1. Iwe, you mean you haven’t seen how Chakwera makes his decisions. Hypocrisy is his style (The case of K20m per constituency in parliament), crushing those with any contrary opinion in his party (The case of former party district chairmen, Kabwira, Njobvuyalema, Jumbe et al), making serious legal/political outbursts based on social media sentiments etc, eish!

  4. This is the wrong presentation of facts! It’s not that MCP has offered Chilima something, but what the two discussed. The problem is DPP is to mispresent facts so that one should feel belittled and unconsidered. That’s wrong. Chilima is a mature politician who knows what is good for the country and he can see far beyond the forthcoming elections. He and Chikwera have come to know each other very and in most instance share a similar quality of leadership – boldness, frankness, and focus. As people, these two honorable gentlemen can surely build one adorable thing together, putting aside their partisan affiliations. Let them move forward together toward liberating Malawi from bandits. Viva Malawi!

    1. Betha was betha ukuyankhula ngati Mwana. Sukumudziwa munthu zimene amapanga. If man can betray God, what can stop him from betraying a fellow human being? Chilima akapanga alliance NDI Chakwera zimuonekera. Reverend pano uzimu unatha kalekale pano akungokhala ngati Shekau wa Bokohalamu. Making an alliance with MCP is suicidal for Chilima. That is a fact.

  5. What has Chilima gained by leaving DPP? He has been state vp for 5 years. Does it make sense for him to be runningmate to Chakwera who has never been a minister?

    1. AND ON WHO’S ORDER (INSTITUTION IF YOU MAY LIKE) SHOULD ONE FIRST BECOME AN MP, CABINET MINISTER TO BECOME HEAD OF STATE??
HOW MANY OF SUCH BAFFOONS WHO’VE FOLLOWED YOU ‘CORRIDOR’ HAVE MADE GOOD PRESIDENTS FOR MALAWI (CHECK THE RATIO OF THE 5 PAST PRESIDENTS)??

      1. Unlike Chakwera, Chilima has cabinet experience and deserves to eaf the alliance on that account.

  6. Go Chilima. They will kill you and get another running mate. Please go join them, prepare your last will and live a righteous life ready to meet your maker. Go thee well

  7. Chilima NDI mbuzi yamunthu. Munthu opanda masomphenya ndipo omvetsa chisoni kwambiri. Sindikudziwa Kuti anamuloza ndani. Akufuna u president oti unali wake kale Koma kupanda discipline. Chilima automatically akanakhala president 2024 akanati asachoke Ku DPP. Pano akufuna mpando wake omwe kuchokera Ku opposition bench. Lero lomwe linadetsa nthengu. Chilima can’t accuse Mutharika Kuti anamuchotsa kuchipani. Koma chifukwa chokula Mutu anazichotsa yekha. Pano akufuna u VP kuchokera Ku alliance ndichipani cha ng’ona. Kuzichedwetsa basi. Nthawi imene akufuna u VP wa alliance NDI nthawi imene anayenera kukhala president wa dziko. Shame Chilima. You are mayopic . Chilima wakanika kuyionera meter patali. God had already positioned him for presidency in 2024. Iye akuti ayi ine ndikhala president at my own will. Awona zimene anawona ana a Israel ulendo wa masiku 40 unatengera Zaka 40. Lero ndiizi akulowa mu alliance Koma mtendere alibe. Akupanga alliance chifukwa cha pressure NDI Mantha osati Chilima akuifuna alliance Koma angopangira Kuti atani poti zavuta. Beneficiary wa alliance NDI Chakwera a chilima ndi makwelero. Tsogolo la Chilima after alliance silikudziwika. Kulibwino kuima yekha to secure his own political future koma akalowa alliance chipani cha utm chitha ngati makatani.

      1. If Chilima goes to MCP it means DPPand Muluzi are out of power. No body will tamper Chilima and 50% is not any joke,

    1. Joloza chisiru cha muthu, Kodi Chilima anali ndi mpando wanji ku DPP munangomugwilitsa ntchito agalu inu, even mu executive simunamuyikemo ayi lero fwefwe matha bwnji

  8. If Chilima and Chakwera can not find a political solution to join forces, then at least try a
legal contract of power sharing where all aspects of the partnership are clearly spelled out, i.e. when each
shall get a chance to run as president, Expectations, consequences of going back on ones word, etc.
Have those very capable lawyers hammer out a deal, so everyone is clear on their roles, expectations,
and what they are getting into.

      1. Ofcourse not. All I am saying is find a way to work it out. The current situation is not tenable.

  9. UTM has got two options.
    1. Continue existing as a party after election by being in alliance or
    2. Stop existing as a party after election.

Kunena moona UTM is a pressure group , it doesn’t have any base . It is counting on swing votes , ku mpoto. But anthu aku mpoto ngosadalirika as can change any time. If they do that can leave UTM in precarious position destined for doom . You may need to know that anthu sangavotere the party that will lose . At all cost UTm payokha siingapeze mavoti even 20 percent so chilima asakule mtima otherwise atiuza zimene anakambirana ndi Peter mu 2018, ossibly distablising mcp and making sure that mcp doesn’t win chisakho. Skc
may be a traitor. Malawians becareful!!

  10. It’s not becoz MCP has more MPs or its big, chilima should lead the alliance period.Chakwera can also be Vice President, amalawi mwatani Kodi.Chilima knows where things are getting wrong in the government. The constitution gives more powers to president than Vice President.Mcp should humble itself allow chilima to lead. DPP knows who is strong leader between Chakwera and Chilima. If the alliance is led by Chakwera amuberanso nonse amalawi mukuona, Chakwera waberedwa kangati.Put chilima there as a torchbearer other wise forget about defeating DPP and UDF alliance.Only if you want DPP to continue to rule Malawi, put Chakwera.Dpp is afraid of Chilima not Chakwera learn once Malawians please.Malawians are going to vote again it’s because of chilima and UTM.If chilima was in DPP , there was no second presidential election, all of you Malawians knows that. Please MCP members and supporters put Chilima as a torchbearer for the alliance then DPP and UDF is finished.

  11. Chilima and Chakwera are all mercenaries. At the end of it everybody cares about themselves. This is the sole reason they can not make a successful alliance. They do not know each other. Its like a heartbroken woman marrying a heartbroken man. At some near point, they go back to their old ways. Its a fact that both UTM and MCP can not make it to government without each other and at the same time UTM doesn’t trust MCP and vice versa.

Chakwera will suppress Chilima and vice versa. So the alliance btwn these two is a nonstarter. While UTM is democratic, MCP stands for loyalty, dictatorship. The two have a lot in uncommon.

Let’s wait and the the compromise to be made. With UTM and MCP alliance, getting votes from southern and eastern regions will be a tall order, however easy in the northern region. On the point, eastern and northern regions are the political decider in the present situation. With Atupele and Peter, the eastern and southern votes are locked. They will get few votes from central and north because they have akadzifere awo kumeneko. So the chances of Atupele and Peter to carry the day are higher than both combined UTM and MCP and separate.

    That’s politics people…..

    1. Even the five judges of constitutional court advised the parties to go on alliance for the sake of 50+1 votes this is why even ur DPP/ UDF too went back remarrying to see where they left each other like broken marriege some times back . Why not mcp/utm if the two agrees

    2. Obviously that’s what you hope for. Unfortunately the evidence on the ground doesn’t support your theory. Have you ever considered why dpp rigged the annulled election. They were losing. So what makes you think this time around they are going to make it.

  12. Why do I get a feeling that only Chilima is the one expected to humble himself for the sake of the nation? What sort of partnership is this going to be? It should be based on equal footing for both sides. Give and take. Priorities should be about winning so let the best guy who can get votes from all parts of the country lead the alliance…

  13. Chilima is already VP he should be VP again for another 10 years no,go back to the table and agree again.For.me.to create a big competition MCP and UTM must join up but with equal power sharing deal. The 50+1 should set another way of.doing things. The position of VP is manipulatable. It’s not an impressive position in this complicated alliance.

    1. uve got it wrong it wont be 10 yrs since Dr chakwera is serving his last term at MCP it means its one term for his presidency ……according to MCP laws but for the malawis constitution hll av a term in hand that is if he opts to join another party or form his own

      1. It could be better if the agreement goes further to say after Chakwera’s five years then Chilima will take charge but the problem is that these politicians don’t stick to their agreements. They easily change.

    2. Wise up man. How do you expect equal power when there can only be one presidential candidate. Every body expect Chilima to humble himself because that’s the picture most of us see from a distance. Egos aside UTM although growing very strong is still a junior party to MCP. In fact MCP is the strongest party in Malawi now. I wish I said DPP but it hasn’t been tested yet. See what happened to UDF.

  14. Ngati gwilizano sutheka each one of must know you still shifting opportunity to the thugs , wina adzichepetse zithu zidzakuyenderani bwino current boma must be
    removed

    1. @ James you are correct but the reality is these people are proving to be selfish. In reality it’s not about Malawians but what they can do when they are on that seat. They know that the position of vice president is like a lame duck constitutionally hence the reservations. Malawians need to know that NONE of these politicians have their interest at heart. Not the ruling party, not the opposition

  15. BWANA CHILIMA IF YOU WILL ACCEPT IT, I WILL WITHDRAW MY VOTE FROM YOU.

We need you to be president, not vice president.

FROM VICE TO VICE ? DOESN’T MAKE SENSE

      1. Abwana wa Chilima wakhale President basi.
He needs to change now from Vice to President. Dont be vice President forever . Noo.

      1. It is time that will teach Chilima a lesson. We can’t trust a snake. If you carry a snake on your back and help it cross the river, it will bite you after that. None of the offers MCP has made are guaranteed (except runningmate). The changes in the constitution which Chilima wants to consolidate his power will have to be voted in parliament. They will be voted down. What will UTM say? And Chilima and UTM will have nothing.

    1. If the goal is to dislodge this abusive government then the position means nothing. And the truth is MCP has the majority in parliament so to be vice-president mmmmmm doesn’t hold

    2. Even me sayiwona amwene should he go into alliance with mcp and be given runningmate ndiye bwino ndikavotere APM basi wosati masanje anuwo sheet!

    3. The good thing is Chilima is not a retard like you his focus is draining the swamp and not personal glory

  16. chilima’s fortunes aren’t improving much so now he is contemplating to jump out of the frying pan into the fire. he believes he is the best tukumtukum but keeps on being cheated. chilima needs to be streetwise

  17. It is very tricky as it stands cos Chilima is already a Vice President so if becones a Vice President again to Chakweea I dont see any growth in his political life. But this can be good to Malawians my personal opinion is that Chakweea is qwll educated, a good person BUT he is not cut for presidency. So lets wait & see.

    1. If Chilima decides to stand alone the chances of making it are very slim. MCP is a big party and should go first

    2. Justin Malewezi was twice a vice president to Bakili Muluzi. I don’t see the fuss here.

      1. @ Mkanda, Justine had no plans to be president and whenever he plans to be president he definitely has my vote

        1. Chakwera and Chilima are leaders with different strengths. Strengths for Chakwera are not enough to deal with the current situation. We may even loose election with Chakwera as the leader. Even DPP knows that. Remember, during the previous election they transfered Chilima’s name not Chakwera’s because they know Chakwera is easy to defeat. Therefore, we need Chilima to clear the mess starting from the ground. Remember, he established a party and sell it in style.
Let me remind Chakwera supporters, that if this alliance fails, Chakwera will loose election and will be the biggest loser because he is not standing for the next term. Therefore, he should give in. Giving Chilima “take it or leave it” was doing wrong things with confidence and poor judgement. Chilima is an assert. Not only MCP NEED HIM; THE WHOLE COUNTRY NEED HIM.

          1. Akangoyelekeza kuyima payekha chilima or chakwera agwa ndithu sawina masankho !!! & kutha kwawo pandale kukhala kumeneko coz if Dpp wins again muluzi will be much popular than chilima and chakwera so guys gonjelanani kuti mutipulumutse

          2. My memory reminds me that Chilima spent 4 years enjoying the fruits of corruption with these apumbwas and only rebelled after they refused him the presidency so I I don’t see his strength there other than greed and boldness without purpose servitude.

          3. Za bodzatu izi. Let him( Chilima) stand alone period! Sakafika or 20% ija akatero watha sadzavekaso. Chakwera is going to win this Election with or without alliance with Chilima, I challenge you. The DPP and the UDF has always been there together, so no stress!
