Chima is 2017 National Bank golf champion

Lilongwe based golfer Gershom Chima had every reason to walk tall in the corridors of Lilongwe Golf Club, when he emerged champion for the 2017 edition of National Bank of Malawi golf tournament held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the club’s 18-hole golf course.

Holding a handicap of 18 prior to the tournament, the EBR (Earn Your Bragging Rights) golfer won the competition after hitting 41 stablefold points. He received a tailor-made tailor golf bag and trophy from sponsors National Bank.

“This is one of the biggest tournaments on the golf calendar and all the big names in golf participated. To floor all these big names, it feels exactly great. The secret behind all this is that I did not have to be nervous. I was just calm and got my motivation, when I played a par from outside the green on hole number 5,” said Chima.

On second position was Francis Kambalame, who had 39 points followed by veteran golfer Sean Raman on 38 points.

Youthful Christopher Mzokomera scooped prizes for both the longest drive and nearest the pin.

In the ladies’ section, Regina Mwanza, also playing handicap 18 was the hero with 43 stablefold points in her account. She was closely trailed by trophy hungry Maria Lee Cho on 42 points then Mina Mkandawire on 38.

Ekari Mvula claimed both the longest drive and nearest the pin for the ladies.

Speaking during the prize presentation, National Bank’s general manager for wholesale banking Harold Jiya described the tournament as a big success.

“We are so much impressed with the way things have gone. We had an impressive field of about 140 golfers and there was a lot of mixing and networking, which was our main purpose for sponsoring this competition.

“We have also been able to explain to our customers some of the new developments in the bank including the new IT platform and the new visa credit card for online and point of sale payments. We will be back with another tournament next year,” said Jiya.
