Cezobal salutes SKC: Build a basketball court campaign hits K12mil

Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) says it has so far raised over K12 million in the Build a Court fundraising drive, which saw State Vice President Dr Saulos Klause Chilima (SKC) featuring in a basketball game involving Civo Buccs Socials and Diplomats at Civo Basketball Court in Lilongwe on July 12, 2017.

Dubbed Build a Court Basketball Tournament, the event attracted 12 teams from the corporate world, diplomatic missions and other quarters, which all contributed money through registration and other means.

Chilima starred for Civo Buccs as a point guard but last only two quarters after pulling his left arm muscle. He tried to come back in the third quarter following a fans’ outcry but the injury forced him out again.

Although there was a high profile TNM Super League football match involving Civil Sporting FC and league leaders Mighty Be Forward Wanderers just next to the basketball court, the day-long tournament attracted a huge crowd, never seen at a basketball game.

In a statement made available to Nyasatimes after the tournament, Cezobal chairperson Hellen Chabunya hailed Chilima for steering the corporate world and several other government and non-governmental institutions to contribute towards the cause.

“We had probably the biggest crowd at a basketball event on Saturday and have so far managed to raise slightly over K12 million. This is mainly because of the support we got from the Vice President without whom we could not have managed to reach this far.

“We are so thankful to the Vice President and the rest of the companies, institutions and individuals that have contributed to make our dream of building a new basketball court and other facilities alive,” said Chabunya.

The Cezobal chairperson said in the statement that the league has since raised the target of cash to be raised from K20 million to K25 million.

She said the league will continue fundraising and receiving donations up to August 15, 2017.
