Chiukepo’s OG,  Gerald Phiri Jnr grand game: Malawi players  in South Africa’s PSL

Malawian striker Chiukepo Msowoya returned to professional football with mixed fortunes after scoring an own goal in a 5-2 loss to SuperSport on Wednesday in South Africa’s top league, PSL.

Chiukepo: Still scores but this time in his own goal

However Chiukepo’s compatriot Gerald Phiri Jnr made his debut at Platinum Stars in style against Orlando Pirates.

The former Mighty Be Forward Wanderers midfieder played almost full game being substituted in the 92nd minute.

The youngster, who is son to Malawi national team  acting coach Gerald Phiri Snr, put up a grand performance to earn plaudits from coach Calvin Johnson.

He fashioned out the game’s golden chance when he set up captain Vuyo Mere but shot wide with Orlando Pirates goalkeeper to beat.

Johnson said in a post match interview that Phiri was “outstanding and was a candidate for man of the match award.”

In another game Malawian striker Atusaye Nyondo’s team Bloemfontein Celtic went down 1-0 to defending

champions Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0.

Former Europe based Flames top notch striker Esau Kanyenda was used as substitute in the 75th minute for his team Polokwane City FC’s one-all draw against Maritzburg.

On Tuesday another Malawian player Gabadinho Mhango scored a brace as Bidvest Wits thumped Ajax Cape Town 5-0.
