Commonwealth Secretary-General arrives in Malawi

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma on Saturday arrived in Malawi where he will hold talks with President Bingu wa Mutharika, political and civil society leaders.

Sharma touched down Kamuzu International Airport aboard Kenyan Airways and was welcomed by deputy minister of foreign affairs Kondwani Nankhumwa.

Commonwelth’s assistant spokesperson for Africa, Julius Mucunguzi, told Nyasa Timesin Lilongwe that the Secretary General will start his tour of duty  on Monday.

He will meet and brief President Mutharika about current developments in the Commonwealth Secretariat following mandates from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which took place in Perth, Australia, in October 2011.

Sharma will also meet Malawi’s Leader of Opposiiton, John Tembo and other senior political leaders including civil society leaders.

Mucunguzi said Sharma will  discuss current political, economic and social developments and “explore the range of support the Commonwealth can mobilise.”
