There was commotion at the Shoprite complex in Lilongwe when citizens reacted angrily wen a Malawian of Indian origin slapped a worker in full view of the customer.
The incident happened at a popular restaurant called Chicken Inn which was formerly housed a Hungry Lion cafe.
According to an eyewitness Nyasa Timesinterviewed at the scene, the Indian slapped the female worker because she had delayed to give out the order in time to the waiting customers.
Malawi Police rushed to the scene and rescued the Indian when angry passers by wanted his head and demanded to physicaly man handle him.
“People were chanting insulting songs against this Asian and continued to chant achoke achoke achoke!” said one witness.
He said some angry Malawians were even calling on the leadership to do “an Idid Amin” on the Asians in apparent to mass deportation of Asaians by former Ugandan dictator.
The tension also disrupted business in the main shoprite which shares the same building with Chicken Inn.
Malawians have complained on several occaisions on how Asians ill treat workers where some have even reached a point of locking them overnight to work till the morning with no safety measures inside the companies.
