“Completely fabricated!” Atupele Muluzi explodes over claims he bribed ESCOM guards
Former Energy Minister Atupele Muluzi has launched a furious counterattack after being accused of promising former ESCOM security guards K1 million each in exchange for withdrawing a court case, branding the allegations “completely false, fabricated and without any factual basis.”
Muluzi hit back after a media outlet published a story linking him to the alleged arrangement involving former ESCOM security guards during his time as Minister of Energy, issuing a strongly worded rebuttal categorically denying any wrongdoing.
“At no time did I promise former ESCOM security guards MK1 million each, nor did I instruct anyone to withdraw a court case on the basis of such a promise,” he insisted.
“How can such serious allegations be presented as fact?”
The former minister went further, claiming he had no knowledge whatsoever of the alleged arrangement and questioning how such damaging allegations could be reported as established fact without any supporting evidence being produced.
Muluzi said he categorically rejected any attempt to link him to conduct he insisted “simply did not happen,” while acknowledging that political criticism forms a legitimate part of democratic debate — but drawing a sharp line between fair scrutiny and what he characterised as deliberate fabrication.
“Publish your evidence” — Muluzi throws down the gauntlet
In a direct challenge to the publication behind the story, Muluzi demanded it put up or shut up.
“If ‘Situation Malawi’ has evidence to support these allegations, I invite them to publish it,” he said, insisting that if no such evidence exists, the outlet should retract the story entirely and issue a formal apology for what he branded a fabricated account.

Defiant and unrepentant, Muluzi made clear he had no intention of backing down in the face of what he called falsehoods, vowing to continue pushing back against allegations he considers misleading.
“Facts matter. Truth matters. Accountability matters,” he declared, closing his rebuttal with a pointed reminder that he expects the same standards of accuracy and accountability to be applied to those making the claims against him.
The row is likely to intensify scrutiny of the original allegations, with attention now turning to whether the publication will respond to Muluzi’s direct challenge to substantiate its reporting — or retract the story as he has demanded.
