Malawi’s Muslims mark Prophet Muhammad’s birth in style

Muslims across Malawi have joined believers around the world in commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad, with thousands taking part in the country’s annual Ziyara Parade amid scenes of prayer, reflection and celebration.

In Blantyre, the main event is currently underway at Mpingwe Sports Club in Limbe, where the faithful have gathered for prayers, recitations and reflection on the life and teachings of the Prophet, marking one of the most significant dates on the Islamic calendar.

The day’s festivities kicked off with a vibrant parade from Kanjedza Mosque through to the sports club, drawing large crowds of worshippers along the route.

The commemoration falls on 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal, observed this year on 25 August, with similar celebrations taking place simultaneously in other parts of the country as Muslim communities nationwide mark the occasion together.

Charity at the heart of celebrations

Beyond prayer and procession, the annual Ziyara programme has placed a strong emphasis on charity, with organisers distributing assorted items to patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and Chiradzulu Hospital, among other institutions, bringing comfort to some of the region’s most vulnerable during the celebrations.

Event coordinator Padela Rahil said the commemorations were designed with a clear purpose: to strengthen faith among believers, promote unity within the Muslim community, and encourage acts of charity toward those in need.

The Ziyara Parade remains one of the standout events on Malawi’s religious calendar, drawing together Muslims from across the country each year in a shared celebration of faith, community and generosity.
