Constance Kachoka, 23, crowned Miss Matofotofo Malawi
In a glamorous event, the Miss True African Queen (formerly Miss Matofotofo) contest saw Constance Kachoka, 23, crowned the new pageant’s queen at Sunbird Capital in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, on Friday night.
Kachoka was Miss Matofotofo Lilongwe, the title she claimed after replacing Florence Banda – an employee of Mota Engil – who was stripped of her crown following allegations of bedding a married man.
A marketing graduate from Malawi Adventist University in Ntcheu, Kachoka became Malawi’s Miss Matofotofo after shrugging off Nyembezi Mwanza, Emma Manda and Esther Banda representing the North, from the South were Madalo Chimalizeni, Ellen Chiwaula, Takondwa Kasasu, Hilda Chiwembo and Alinafe Chisale. The Centre had Kachoka herself, Zainab Chimphanje, and Halima Assad.
The First Princes is Emma Manda from Lilongwe and second princess is Ellena Chiwaula from Blantyre . Nancy Chisale from Blantyre won the Miss Personality.
The queen went away with K75, 000 prize money, a live goat, two nights voucher at Sunbird Hotels, hampers from PSI and Carlsberg and an outfit from Mirrium Creazone.
Manda received K30 000 and Chiwaula K20 000. The two also got a live goat and hampers from PSI and Carlsberg.
The big ladies paraded the stage in casual, formal, traditional and smart traditional wears to impress the judges who included Big Brother three finalist Hazel Warren.
The new Matofotofo queen who works for Forever Living in the marketing department said she was “delighted” to win and that she will “carryout and achieve the charity work .”
Miss Matofotofo has become a popular beauty pageant in Malawi because many see it as a representation of true African beauty -the heavy set or overweight women.
The pageant’s national director Florence Banda (of Zodiak Radio) who was the first title holder said she was grateful to the sponsors and the patrons for the glamorous event. She asked the business sector to invest more in the pageant.
However, Banda said this is the last show under the founders Lwazi promotions from Zimbabwe.
“Our partnership has not been rosy,” she claimed.
“I will be announcing soon what exactly I will be doing in regards to this. But these shows have come to stay in Malawi and they will be locally organised,” she said.
Among the notable names at the finale were Lilongwe South East Parliamentarian Willard Gwengwe, Lilongwe City Council Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Mmangisa, Miss Malawi Susan Mtegha and Deputy Minister of Gender Jennipher Chilunga, who was the guest of honour.
The event was spiced up with live music performances by Lulu and Lucius Banda.
Miss Matofotofo was launched to identify the true ‘bootylicious’ beauties of Africa as opposed to Westerner’s definition of beauty for tall, slim, medium bust, pencil lips, slightly pronounced hips, a high cheekbone plus and element of intelligence.
