Controversy surrounds Madonna’s fundraise for Malawian doctor-report

A cloud of uncertainty is hovering over  Madonna’s recent fundraising drive she said is aimed at raising money to train a young Malawian doctor to follow in footsteps of local pediatrician Dr. Erick Borgstein.

Madonna, according to a Sunday Times report, is asking a horde of her fans to donate $5 (MK1, 500) or more to support people like Dr. Borgstein in Malawi through her Raising Malawi, a US registered charity organisation.

In the report, the  paper contends that Madonna is claiming that the distinguished doctor is able to perform surgery and provide medical care to children inMalawicourtesy of support he gets from the super-rich pop star who is said to be worth over $650 million.

The latest fundraising venture comes just two years after Madonna abandoned the construction of a of $15 million girls’ academy due to gross financial mismanagement.

Appeal

In an email to a multitude of her fans, Madonna asked her ‘Dear Friends’ to donate for her noble cause.

“Will you consider donating $5 or more to support people like Dr. Borgstein who are helping orphans and vulnerable children inMalawi?” said Madonna in her email to the fans.

She strengthens her appeal by alleging that for the past six years she has, “remained committed to supporting orphans and vulnerable children inMalawi….This would not be possible without the support of people like you, who share in our mission to end poverty and hardship endured by the country’s estimated one million orphans.”

Madonna also alleges that her organisation is working with what she called ‘credible staff’ at the referral Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) inBlantyre.

Added she: “Dr. Borgstein treats thousands of paediatric patients every year, performing hundreds of life-saving operations. He also trains medical students in general and paediatric surgery, and thanks to the support of Raising Malawi, he will now formally train a young Malawian doctor to follow in his footsteps as a paediatric surgeon.

However, it is not revealed how much money the ‘Material Girl’ is looking for to make her dream come true.

Self-serving

Meanwhile, some independent minded Malawian citizens feel that Madonna is using Malawi’s poverty situation to make herself a fortune following previous allegations of high level mismanagement of her school project that never see light of day.

She hit headlines some few years ago when she adopted two Malawian orphans namely; David Banda and Mercy James.

Surprisingly, there is no official word from government officials on the type of purported working relationship they have with the pop star especially when she puts QECH as a conduit for her fundraising venture.
