Cops demand allowances for guarding VP’s Mzimba houses

Police officer  in Mzimba are demanding allowances back dated to April this year for guarding three houses belonging to Malawi’s Vice President Khumbo Kachali.

The Cops told Nyasa Times that they are supposed to provide security only when the Veep or his wife are in Mzimba adding that in his absence providing security for his houses is regarded as a private matter hence the Veep must pay.

They claim Kachali ordered nine cops (three on day duty and six at night) to provide 24 hour guard services for his houses but the officers said this has strained their man power to police the largest district in Malawi.

Vice President Khumbo Kachali: Well guarded

When Police are hired for private duties the minimum is MK3, 000 for day duty and MK6, 000 per night duty.

“The Police/population ratio is 1 per 1700 people. Patrols have been short-changed of manpower since this arrangement came into effect,” our source said adding “Can Police manage to guard all his personal houses? Suppose he had 10 houses. This is misuse of man power”

The Cops have since urged all senior government officials to use the Police professionally and not for personal gains.

Mzimba Police Station Public Relations Officer Gift Nyirongo could not be reached for comment but sources at the Northern Region Police Headquarters in Mzuzu confirmed the development saying the Cops are disgruntled.
