Council takes Athletics Association of Malawi to task on ill treatment of Limbani

Malawi National Council of Sports has taken to task Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) for among others the ill-treatment of the association’s administration secretary Bertha Limbani and its general administration since it took over office in September last year.

The new committee of Godfrey Phiri,  president, Senti Banda the vice-president, Captain Ken Tembo  the teasurer, General Secretary Frank Chitembeya, his deputy Ireen Luka was ushered I office  September last year.

Chitembeya was the only survival from the previous committee after beating former vice general secretary Mzee Makawa as Phiri defeated his former secondary school teacher, now Chancellor College senior lecturer Dr Richard Nyirongo.

Treasurer Grey Ndovi also lost in one of the most emotional elections for the association over the years.

Sports Council, who employed Limbani and seconded her to AAM, threatened to throw the association out of Sports Council premises, from where they are operating.

“Sports Council asked them why they do not involve the secretary in their operations and they said they do not need her services because what they need is the service of a messenger,” said the source.

During the meeting AAM claimed that it does not know the terms of reference for the secretary’s work prompting Sports Council Executive Director to embarrass them when he produced a memo signed by Chitembeya applauding the government’s sports governing arm for deciding to give them a permanent secretary.

Limbani crossed path with the incumbent committee for being accused of associating with the previous committee, led by Dr Nyirongo.

Limbani confirmed the development saying she was a victim of circumstances.

“It’s true. In fact the whole committee including Mr Kachitamanja was there,” Limbani said.

“They said they did all this because of the campaign period they claim that I didn’t want them to be elected.”

One of commentator, who spoke on conditions of anonymity said AAM would have embraced to work with Limbani.

“What they are doing is wrong because Bertha was just doing her work. Working with the current committee,” said the commentator.

“They should have done what Malawi Olympic (Moc) did to incorporate the Administration Manager Naomi Chinatu.”

In a related development, the AAM General Secretary Chitembeya, also removed Limbani to attend an secretaries administration course in Kenya after all the logistics were made by the previous committee for her to go.

Chitembeya took advantage of the changes of the dates to replace her when he was not supposed to attend because it was for administration secretaries.

President Phiri was also involved in a similar saga when he included himself to attend a coaching course, which is against International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) regulations because of conflict of interest.

The situation forced the right person Flames and Bullets coach Eddington Ng’onamo to lose his privilege of allowances as IAAF indicated that it could not offer allowances to two people from one country.

Ng’onamo’s employers Kalibu Academy paid his allowances.
