Court convicts 45 people for loitering at night in Lilongwe
The Nkukula Magistrate Court in Lilongwe on Wednesday convicted 45 people after they all pleaded guilty to the offense of Idle and
Disorder under Section 180 of the Penal Code.
Out of the total figure, 33 were men while 12 were women.
State witness Sergeant Vasco Magwaya told the court on Wednesday that the suspects were arrested during the night of 4th and 5th September 2017 when Police conducted a sweep in exercise aimed at reducing crimes.
They were found loitering around different locations surrounding Area 25 during odd hours and failed to give proper accounts of themselves.
In her rulling, First Grade Magistrate Cecilia Onsewa said most of the crimes are perpetrated by people who have nothing to do and that it is therefore the duty of the courts to protect members of the general public.
She therefore slapped each of them with a K3,000.00 fine or in default serve a Prison Sentence of One month.
Nyasa Times understands that 40 people managed to pay as of Wednesday afternoon while the five including one female were yet to pay the fine.
Meanwhile, Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Laban Makalani has warned residents of Area 25 and surrounding areas to
avoid walking around during odd hours.
He has also however advised them to take with them personal identification cards that can bail them out when they meet police
during night based on tangible reasons of their movements.
