Court employees nabbed for theft

Police in Mzuzu are keeping in custody  three employees working for the accounts department of the Mzuzu Court registry on allegations that they stole close to MK1 million cash, Nyasa Times has established.

Police nabbed Rogers Tembo, Chifundo Mwase and Dorothy Mwale and charged them with theft by servant.

Sources told Nyasa Times that the money , which was withdrawn from the bank on Thursday and kept overnight at the office, was meant for the High Court, Chief Resident Magistrate Court, High Court SACCO and payment for a Magistrate on studies.

But on Friday morning Chifundo Mwale, who came earlier reported to his boss that the office had been broken into and the money was missing.

Ironically, the Accounts Office is on the second floor, more than 20 metres high and the premises are heavily guarded by the court’s Marshalls apart from the fact that they are a stone throw away from Mzuzu Police Station and the Northern Region Police Headquarters.

Police were called to investigate but found nothing broken or forced to open. They only found an open and empty filing cabinet where the cash was stored overnight.

Mzuzu Police Station Public Relations Officer Edward expressed ignorance on the issue.

The trio is currently on Police bail.
