Court fines minibus touts

The Mzuzu First Magistrate Court on Wednesday fined 11 people MK11, 000 each after convicting them for touting.

The convicts are yet to pay the fine and have been sent to Mzuzu Prison.

Police in Mzuzu arrested the ‘Touts’ on October 3rd, 2011 at Mzuzu depot after they were found coaxing and calling people to board different buses and mini buses.

They all pleaded guilty but asked the court for mercy.

State Prosecutor Betty Msowoya asked the court to pass a deterrent sentence saying most ‘Touts’ were thieves in disguise.

And Magistrate Brian Banda agreed with the state saying that many people are learned and do not need to be directed as to which bus to board,

Banda said the presence of a Police unit at the depot means that people can enquire there.
