Court lifts MHC boss Mondiwa’s suspension

The Industrial Relations Court has struck off the roll the suspension which was imposed on former Assistant General Manager of Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) Floyd Mondiwa.

Mondiwa was arrested together with his former boss Golden Matiya in connection to the housing scam.

The two were arrested by the graft bursting body Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for failure to declare interest and abuse of office.

Other influential individuals and politicians who bought the houses at discounted prices include  former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Mutharika, the then Minister of Housing, now Minister of Trade John Bande and Former Attorney General, now Supreme Court of Appeal judge Justice Jane Ansah.

Mondiwa: Back to work

Matiya  did not declare interest when his wife bought a house number NE/0018  in the affluent suburbs of Nyambadwe at a 56 % discount.

He was freed by the Blantyre Magistrate Court few weeks ago due to what the court said was a result of lack of evidence.

Speaking in an interview, Mondiwa’s attorney Chancy Gondwe told Nyasa Times that his client has now returned into office following the court ruling.

“The Industrial Relations Court has ordered that the suspension was unlawful, the same has been lifted and has since been reinstated to his position,” said Gondwe, adding, “As you are aware my client has gone through a lot but it’s a relief that he is now back in office.”

To be paid

Meanwhile, the defense attorney further explained that the MHC has been ordered to pay Mondiwa all his dues dating back to the time he was suspended.

“The court has ordered MHC to pay him all his dues from the date he was suspended and that process is being worked out,” added Gondwe.

MHC made dreadful headlines few months ago when it was embroiled in housing scam that prompted authorities to send the two top managers on unpaid leave. Apart from the managers, the scam also involved former ruling DPP senior officials and their cohorts.

However, in a move that perplexed many Malawians, all the political figures were let off the hook by the ACB.
