Court revokes bail for MCP ward councillor charges with sex crime

Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ward councillor for Chibanja in Mzuzu Charles Mlogera is back in the cooler following a ruling by Mzuzu magistrates court to revoke his bail.

Councillor Mlogera: Back to prison after Magistrate court revoked bail granted by High Court

Mzuzu magistrate George Major Mbewa revoked bail on Monday for the councillor  who is answering six counts of abduction and defilement for three teenage girls.

The magistrate accused Mlogera of flouting bail conditions including failure to report to police for his bail condition.

Mlogera was arrested on January 27 and after four unsuccesful applications for bail at the magistrates court, his lawyer managed to get the bail at the High Court in Mzuzu.

Questions are now being asked whether the lower court has powers to revoke bail imposed by the High Court.

Lawyer for Mlogera, Amidu Saidi said he was shocked with the decision by the magistrate court to revoke the bail.

“My client has followed and kept all bail conditions imposed by the court,” he said.

He said he would appeal against the ruling.

Mlogera is accused of taking three underage girls to a pub, got them drunk and had sex with each one of them at a lodge in Mzuzu all night long.

He denies the accusations
