The court heard that Zeria Kasiya scolded both hands of her five-year-old son and some parts of the body after he misused K100 out of K200 she gave him to buy some items.

Magistrate Augustin Mizaya said he was lenient with the sentence because Kasiya was the first offender and she pleaded not guilty thereby did not waste court’s time.

Mizaya said however the sentence should deter other would be parent offenders who mistreat, harass or torture their children.

In mitigation, Kasiya asked for a lenient sentence, saying she was a bread winner of her house since she is a single mother.

The state prosecution hailed the sentence, saying what they were looking for is a custodial sentence.
