Seven hardcore criminals escaped from police cell at Chikwawa Police Station on Tuesday and money amounting to over MK100, 000 ($200)went missing at the same time.
According to Chikwawa Assistant Commissioner, Macmillan Nyirongo, the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2015.
Nyirongo said the thugs escaped through the roof in presence of officers on duty adding that most escapees were on pending to answer charges of theft especially of cattle.
He said his office was investigating the matter, but also urged his officers to be on alert and provide full security to both their offices as well as to the communities.
The Assistant commissioner then assured the general public that police would continue to be on alert in order to maintain security in all areas in the district.
The new officer in charge has an uphill task to build the image of the police as communities have been accusing the law enforcers of failing to work in the best interest of the public.–Reporting by Steve Chirombo, ManaFollow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
