Crocodile kills Mangochi man along Lake Malawi

The remains of a Mangochi man who was attacked and killed by a prowling crocodile has been found after a 24-hour search.
The deceased was caught on Friday evening along Lake Malawi and efforts by the community to search for the body immediately after the crocodile attacked and dragged him into the water incident proved unsuccessful.
According to our Mangochi source, Paul Mgundaphiri, members of the community only found the body on Saturday afternoon.
Mgundaphiri identified the departed man as Sidreck Dickson from Chipalamawamba Village, T/A Mponda in Mangochi District. He was in his early 40s.
“The deceased was caught at around 18:30hrs yesterday [Friday] but efforts to trace the dead body proved futile last night. However, it has been found today [Saturday] at 15:00hrs,” said Mgundaphiri.
Meanwhile, according to Mgundaphiri, rangers from the Marine Department in the district have shot dead one crocodile.
The shooting occurred just minutes before the body was discovered but is not known whether or the gunned down crocodile is the one that killed Dickson.
Efforts to talk to Mangochi Police Spokesperson Rhodrick Maida proved unrewarding as his phone could not be reached.
The animal-human conflict is common in some parts of the shores of Lake Malawi and the Shire River where several people are attacked and killed.
