Dausi, Chaponda barred from PAC meeting
Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader in parliament Dr George Chaponda and publicity secretary Nicholas Dausi have been rejected from joining Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament .
DPP sent Chaponda and Dausi to replace its Zomba Chisi MP Peter Mangulenje and Mulanje North Stephen Namacha in the committee.
But the committee on Wednesday barred the two from attending its meetings on grounds of irregularities.
According to PAC chairperson Beatrice Mwangonde, the change of DPP members in the committee did not go through the Business Committee of Parliament and the majority of the committee members voted against Dausi and Chaponda joining the committee.
But Chaponda and Dausi remained adamant that they still consider themselves PAC members .
“It is fallacious for the committee to reject us on the basis of suspecting questionable motives,” said Dausi.
PAC had resumed its meetings to probe into massive looting in government which is dubbed ‘cashgate’.
The committee has summoned former finance minister Ken Lipenga, gun shot survivor budget director Paul Mphwiyo to a hearing scheduled between 20 to 22 November.
Malawi Parliament publicist Ian Mwenye said the committee is meeting stakeholders on ‘cashgate scandal’ and meetings are taking place at Parliament Building from 9:30am.
