Don’t turn Malawi into Mafia fiefdom

The one sure thing that the shooting of Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo and the ensuing Cashgate scandal has brought to light is the existence of the Sicily-like Mafia dons and godfathers in Malawi who are prepared to maim and kill in order to lay their hands on the ultimate prize: Poor people’s tax-payers money.

The shooting of Mphwiyo itself, perpetrated by these evil men that have sold their souls to money and its link to the Cashgate is a conundrum that has still not been conclusively solved until today.

But it seems the evil men insatiable hunger to gain access to Malawi’s treasury has no boundaries and brooks no dissent that now the copycat Mafia dons are threatening violence on anybody who care stand in their way.

They began with President Joyce Banda who Information Minister Brown Mpinganjira claimed two weeks ago was receiving threats apparently for her supposed unrelenting fight to get to the bottom of the Cashgate scandal.

Then just two days ago, two journalists associated with investigating how taxpayers’ money has been looted by these soulless people in a racket that has span over ten years and has squeezed over K110 billion from treasury, claimed that they too are receiving threats from the evil-minded people who are hell bent on keeping the status to enrich themselves at the expense of decent hard-working Malawians.

We, at Nyasa Times, unreservedly condemn these feeble attempts to stop the wheels of state machinery from rolling to get to the bottom of the Cashgate scandal and bring to book all the culprits involved.

We call on all Malawians of goodwill to reject the creation of a Mafia fiefdom in the country with view to establish a lawless society whose beneficiaries can only the Mafioso themselves.

Malawi belongs to all Malawians and decent hardworking Malawians pay tax to pave their roads, buy drugs for hospitals and to build decent schools for their children, just to mention a few among other functions.

It is certainly not to enrich some Capital Hill fat-cats and their collaborators who take advantage of the porous financial systems in government to skim us all in broad daylight.

And instead of retreating into hide-holes, they now have the audacity to threaten those that are laboring day and night to stop their evil machinations and protect our hard earned tax from their shameless clutches.

The rallying call and message from Police and other authorities in Malawi such as the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) as well as journalists should be: No retreat, no surrender.

Malawi should not be turned into some private province in 19th Century Italy: A fiefdom for the Mafioso.
