DPP cadres brandish pistols at Ben Phiri rally

As the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is accused of increasingly using violence to silence dissent, its cadres who accompanied Ben Phiri, the most powerful former aide of President Peter Mutharika, to a function in Thyolo on Sunday brandished pistols in public and taking photos which have gone viral on social media.

The increasing brandishing  pistols by DPP youth has brought to question whether Malawi streets are safe for both locals and tourists.

The cadres are part of the contingent of the security detail to Phiri, who is DPP Director of Operations or Field Marshall.

But DPP spokesman Francis Kasaila and secretary general Jeffrey wa Jeffrey were coy to comment on the matter.

Apparently, the brandishing of pistols is a tactic to sew panic and fear among the people that the DPP will hold on to power even through ‘barrel of a gun’.

DPP has suffered lots of image problems because of corrupt senior members, some of whom are under the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) probe.

There are DPP officials who have brought Escom to its knees through dubious contracts and dubious payments, there are DPP officials who force Lilongwe Water Board and Macra to give “donations” to the party, yet in democracy there is a red line between party and government business.

  2. Malawi armed forces conducted an operation bwezani that successfully disarmed Malawi young pioneers in 1992. Why are they unable to disarm Dpp cadets? We have Jappie Muhango arming and stoning a peaceful gathering and is let scot free.

    We have Noel Kaiya, showing off a dangerous weapon in public, just like that and him too is above the constitution.

    What kind of an army do we have in Malawi that plays double standards when it comes to defending the constitution?

    Please fellow Malawians wherever you may be, let’s all rise up against this regime. This is too much!

    How on earth can a civilian entity, the DPP Cadet wing, be armed yet we have the Malawi Armed Forces?
    Ben Phiri why do want to play the big brother among the civilians? DPP and Ben Phiri why are you arming the cadets? You must know that Malawi has clearly set security structures and systems and nobody in the land has authority to have own armed apparatus besides the MPS and MDF.
    This is an extreme manifestation of executive and blind arrogance and the MDF must come in to bring some sanity, the way the armed wing of Young Pioneers was managed and brought to size

  6. Nganiza Muthulika, even if Ben Phiri was in danger who is he to be surrounded by gun carriers? How many people are in danger in Malawi that need protection and do not have this opportunity? The point is that we have weak police service that should have acted swiftly at a mere suspicion of anybody carrying a gun because the law does not allow ordinary person to do so in the country. If private security guards are not allowed to carry guns why should the cadets be allowed to carry pistons.

    1. I agree with your point. But I would hasten to say that the biggest problem in the country is that we lack strong characters in opposition that could hold Mutharika accountable on this and many other Dpp weaknesses.

      Why can’t they organise a riot? They are optunists who on their own cannot start upheavals. But that like Udf would wait until someone strong enough like late Chihana, start it and then snatch it away from them.

There are many examples in the BIBLE to prove this. He may have allowed MCP/Chakwera to lose the election for a purpose to prove that DPP is the same and has not changed (that is if it, DPP really won the election prudently which I doubt. I know of friends who have testified in /public/drinking joints to have helped DPP rig the 2014 elections just as UDF rigged in 1999. They are now enjoying driving Mercedes Benz, drinking like fish, womanizing but know that time will tell. All this GOD allows to happen because he gave man a choice.

  14. Where is the Malawi Police?
    Where is the Malawi Armed Forces, now that DPP has an armed wing over and above the regular national armed apparatus, the same way the old MCP had the armed Young Pioneer?
    Does the police need any evidence for them to arrest these guys? Does the MDF need any more evidence to engage into a disarmorment exercise?

  17. Lawlessness at its worst. The military acted against MYPs in 1992 through Operation Bwezani. We hope that they are watching now what is happening to our hard won democracy. This is unacceptable and must be dealt with before it degenerates into something else.

  27. Our preliminary findings as DPP is that MCP is the one brandishing pistols. How these MCP youth got hold of the pistol is what everybody is failing to understand. Kkkkkkkk.   28. There is nothing wrong in one possessing a pistol as long as it is registered and used for its good intended purpose. If the man appearing in this picture is a personal body guard for Ben Phiri and that the pistol he carried is legally registered then it is ok. However, it is not proper for professional body guards to brandish weapons like that in public more so taking/posing for photos like that. Ben needs to manage his body guards. The problem is how these personal bodyguards are identified, do they go through professional VVIP protection?

    1. Lt Fraser Chakhaza, that is rubbish, you don’t know Malawi laws regarding guns. Licenses are not issued for security purposes as only MDF and police are to protect people in Malawi.

      1. Any individual Malawian has a right to defend himself. Laws in our country are very selective and apply to certain individuals, the rich, those in the ruling party and their cronies. Our Police and MDF cannot manage to provide security to all 17milllion plus Malawians 24/7 that is a fact. Even in countries that are more advanced in security systems like US, Israel, Russia, UK etc that is not possible hence some individual acquire guns for self protection in the event of surprise attacks while some own guns for hunting purposes.
