DPP Councilors arrested for corruption over K1.6mil Masaf 4 funds: Get court bail

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested two ward councilors  of ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and a village development committee chairperson for allegedly abusing development funds in Mulanje district.

Egritta Ndala: ACB arrested the councillors

ACB arrested Biston Chikadewa Councilor for Nambilanje Ward, Councilor Samuel Makwinja of Chambe Ward and Newbry Winiko, VDC Chairman for Chambe Ward on Tuesday this week (14th March, 2017).

The Bureau’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala said the three allegedly abused Local Development Fund (LDF) Funds in MASAF 4 projects meant for rehabilitation of roads, fish ponds and afforestation at Mulanje District Council.

Ndala said the Bureau made the arrest following a complaint in September, 2016 about the alleged abuse of public resources.

“The Anti- Corruption Bureau instituted investigations which established that some funds were abused,” said Ndala.

On Wednesday (15th March) ACB also arrested Beston and Robert White two Village Development Committee members in Nambilanje Ward.

“The two  Councilors and two Village Development Committee members are likely to be charged with abuse of office, theft, forgery and uttering a false document contrary to Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act, 278, 358 and 360 of the Penal Code respectively,” added Ndala.

Winiko is facing the charge of aiding and abetting a public officer to abuse public office contrary to Section 35 of the Corrupt Practices Act.

Meanwhile, Mulanje Magistrate Court released the suspects on bail.

Magistrate Tsoka Banda released the suspect on bail with K100,000 bail bond each and report to police.

This has nothing to do with alhomwe or DPP. Almost all concillors or Malawians in political or civil service duties are stealing money. Cashgate has names and people from the north, centre and south. stop your unnecesary tribalism… and bola ku Mulanje anthu awaulura okuba awa kwinaku u dont do that bcoz okubayo ndi wamtundu wanu.

Stealing is normal in DPP. Everyone finds it justifiable as long as the leadership in the party engages in massive looting. God help us.
