Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials have today taken political jabs against President Lazarus Chakwera and punched holes in the Tonse Alliance led government.

The DPP administrative secretary Francis Mphepo said at a news conference in Blantyre that Chakwera wants to turn Malawi into a police state.

Mphepo said this was why the police are arresting DPP officials and questioned why some DPP members who are arrested are not taken to court yet.

He says government is also targeting people from the South.

” As DPP we are worried that Malawi has been turned into a police state. This is what Malawians voted against in 1993. MCP is taking Malawians back into the days of detention without trial,” he said.

He said the Chakwera administration is using selective justice.

“Malawi should remain democratic. DPP will not accept to go back to one party state which MCP championed,” said Mphepo.

DPP National organizing Secretary Chimwemwe  Chipungu says the party did not labour to destroy MCP and UTM when the party was in power.

He ssid it is worrying that parties under the Tonse Alliance are busy working to destroy the DPP.

Chipungu claims the Chakwera administration wants to take Malawi tback to one party system.

He also accused the current government of removing on the priority list the construction of 250 secondary schools and hospitals which were in the DPP regime.

On Affordable Input Program, he said the program is a non-starter as it failed in Zambia, as such the current regime must swallow its pride by getting rid of the biometric system in the AIP.

He also says that the program only appears to waste public funds.

Emmanuel Matere councillor from Machinjiri claims that the Chakwera adminsitration t is nepotistic and there is ‘Chewalisation’ of opportunities .

He said the Ombusdman and other state prosecuting agents are targeting people from Southern and eastern regions.

Matere says that the decision to transfer parastatals to Lilongwe will kill business in Blantyre.

  2. Bodza. Vuwa, Mzomera and Uladi are not from the South. Kamuzu did not arrest for no reason at all. Brown Mpinganjira was arrested during the Kamuzu era. Look at his behaviour since 1994. Kulanda akazi a weni and kuba. No wonder he was arrested.

I voted for Tonse alliance solely for Chakwera and SKC to arrest all DPP thieves…we knew they were stealing but ACB and the police were powerless! ACB please ..go after these thieves..no mercy! Nkhalamba zokuba zopanda manyazi! Yes..we voted for democracy in 1993 but not the kind of plundering and thuggery that DPP became! I pray to God that DPP should never rule this country again!

  23. This is a problem created by DPP itself. When you appointed mostly southerners (lomwe belt) to take up most top government positions plus running a corrupt government it simply meant most thieves were from the appointed bunch. If you appointments were ethnically mixed this could have been a mixed arrests too. So this is not a targeted arrest but you appointed bunch of thieves that came from the same area and now look how it looks? had you mixed your appointments or run a corrupt free government this problem could not have been there. Go back to the source of the problem. Clear lesson here don’t run a corrupt government and never appoint people from the same area.

  25. I don’t seem to buy the DPP cheap propaganda though I am also from the South; as some of the people who spoke at this meeting claim to be from. I am from the South; but I have not been targeted by the MCP, that claim therefore, is unfounded. Clearly, those claiming to be targeted, have some issues to answer. We are all aware how arrogant the DPP gurus were few months ago when they were in government, they would break the laws like nobody’s business. MCP is planning to kill DPP? How? It is the leadership wrangles that are killing that party. The old guards don’t want to let the power go off their hands; they still practise politics of telling people some lies. I am afraid, this cannot work nowadays; people are more knowledgeable. People are arrested without being tried; this is also a big lie. Who doesn’t know that the wheels of justice in Malawi are slow to move? The cases in reference are very recent. There are some people that have been on remand for over five years and their cases are yet to be tried. Yet, someone who broke the laws deliberately and got arrested few months ago wants to jump the queue. Are you being fair? Again, don’t cheat yourselves that you can convince anyone that this country can slide back to the one party regime with the aim that people should hate MCP or Tonse Alliance for no reason at all. You will not succeed with that lie. What people have seen during multiparty under DPP is even worse; no development but moving around with petrol bombs, killing innocent people in the process. Your boys terrorised innocent citizens, including the police. You remember one Rodney Jose had to call it quits because of the DPP arrogance? DPP has nobody to blame but themselves.     Anyone who committed a crime must be extremely scared because this is payback time. And don’t give us this crap about persecuting those from the South because, as it happens, most wrongdoers during the just booted out regime were from the South

    If more people from the south are being arrested it is because there’s a very good reason for it……it is because they were disproportionately involved in thieving this country’s resources when they were in power than people from the other regions…..this a fact so do not blame MCP for you own sins do not politicise these arrests for the sake of it.

    If I were you I would have been pushing the government for an amnesty so that everyone in the DPP camp who can return what they stole from the Malawian people they can be forgiven and not sent to jail….

Very true….am not particularly political…i am national but I heard about the idea to move mra hqrs to lilongwe…do you think this gonna benefit malawi financially??…you are going to provide permanent accommodation (houses)for govt Biggie’s in lilongwe..I..e..ministers..etc….if Malawi can afford it..but is it prudent??………….you have arrested a number of previous ruling partie’s members..but where r the cases going??..example..
