DPP SG Wa Jeffrey hanging by the thread, top brass want her out

Embattled and scandal-hit governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Griselder Jeffrey wa Jeffrey’s political career must be hitting its all-time low. It has recently been characterized by public gaffes and she may only be hanging by the thread before President Peter  Mutharika chuck her out as CEO of the party.

Jefferey wa Jeffrey: DPP secretary general under fire from senior members

Nyasa Times  sources within the DPP national governing council (NGC), say calls by some members of the party’s politburo to chuck Wa Jeffrey out from the hot seat are growing louder, accusing her of gross incompetence and gross negligence in carrying out her duties and responsibilities to the detriment of the larger party.

The members have since pushed a written petition to  Mutharika to “seriously” push her aside.

It is not clear whether or not the President  would remove the secretary general considering that he recently pleaded with Jeffrey wa Jeffrey to stay in her job after she had decided to resign following internal pressure to quit.

The senior officials (names withheld) are concerned with Jeffrey wa Jeffrey’s “domineering character” and recent blunders in her public announcements, including when she rudely responded to demands by civil society organizations that DPP returns money that the party allegedly extorted from parastatal firms at a DPP ‘Blue Night’ gala a couple of weeks ago.

The DPP secretary general had called such demands “zachamba” (nonsense), only to backtrack a few days later, calling for dialogue between the party and the CSOs to “amicably” resolve the matter.

They also accuse her for suing her own government for billions of Kwacha for alleged false imprisonment “when she is well aware that President Mutharika and his government are spending sleepless nights to correct the weak economic situation using meagre resources”

“The secretary general has been a troublemaker since her ascendancy to the top position. We are concerned that she is the cause of our national director of women Patricia Kaliati’s loss of her ministerial post following a minor misunderstanding in Mulanje.

“She is also responsible for the unfortunate and undeserved removal of Mr. George Saonda from his post as director of events to ministry of information as director of administration,” one source explained, adding that “as if that was not enough”, Jeffrey wa Jeffrey “worked so hard in connivance with former People’s Party national director of women Mary Clara Makungwa” to ensure that  Annie Makuta loses her job as advisor to the President on women affairs.

The senior members also allege that they ‘got wind’ that the secretary general is machinating to have Dr. Jean Kalirani lose her ministerial post, accusing her of being opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ‘plant’.

“Apparently, she has ambitions to replace Dr. Kalirani without regard to her miserable education background,” said the source, adding that on the contrary, on the MCP allegations, it is the secretary general herself who has strong past MCP and UDF links.

She is currently at loggerheads with Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba over who is command and control over the DPP central region committee.

Logically,  Ntaba, who is DPP vice president responsible for central region, has to lord over the central region committee while the SG looks at the larger national issues.

“When His Excellency the president visited the northern region recently, the secretary brazenly demanded that the president offers all ministerial portfolios to minister of transport Jappie Mhango because she claimed he was the only competent minister in Mutharika’s cabinet. That was a slap in the president’s face as she insinuated that the president was daft as he doesn’t have an idea who qualifies to be cabinet minister,” said the source.

He said during the president’s tour of the northern region, the SG “literally lied” at a public rally, that PP provincial chairman for the north, Maquenda Chunga, had defected to the DPP only for Chunga to deny in a radio interview.

“How could a whole secretary general of the ruling party make such a landmark announcement without being double sure that indeed the concerned has made that decision? That’s gross incompetence,” observed the source.

The concerned members are also concerned that it was the same Wa Jeffrey who “arrogantly” said the north would produce a president in Malawi until the second coming of Jesus Christ, he said.

“How can a leader say such divisive remarks,” he wondered, emphasizing the president must not let her “wriggle free” from the fresh call to oust her, claiming disregarding “the will of the people will catch up with the DPP during the 2019 general elections”.

When contacted for comment, DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila said he was not aware of the said petition.

Jeffrey wa Jeffrey refused to comment on the matter, saying she stopped giving interviews “because you always misquote me”.

These are checks and balances for the DPP SG to work on but she is the good orator and fit for the position of SG.
I don’t mean that she should grow more arrogant than now because downfall and shame will not spare her.
