Irate Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters on Thursday rejected Mwanza Central Member of Parliament Davies Katsonga who organized a rally in the area to introduce himself to the masses as a DPP member.
Katsonga, who recently disbandes his party, Chipani Cha Pfuko (CCP) after joining the ruling DPP, was one of the 12 presidential contestants in the May 20 Tripartite Elections and is a lone MP from his party which also won just one seat in the councillorship.
According to eye witnesses, all that was supposed to be sweet started to turn sour soon when the rally was to start.
Some people who were clad in DPP attire came to the venue singing anti-Katsonga songs.
“Sitikufuna Katsonga kuchipani kwathu kuno [we do not welcome Katsonga in DPP fold],” went one of the songs.
It took anti-riot police officers who used teargas to quell the situation.
However, Katsonga pointed fingers at former member of parliament Nicholus Dausi as the one behind the riot.
“I hear that it’s Dausi who is behind all this, something that is not healthy for democracy,” he said.
However, Dausi, who lost to Katsonga and was appointed by President Peter Mutharika to be head of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) said he has nothing to do with politics.
“I am Director of the National Intelligence Bureau and I have nothing to do with politics,” he told a local radio station.
