Dress Malawian – A new local clothing label on the market

People’s love for designer clothes in Malawi has continued to grow from strength to strength, as witnessed by the increased number of world’s popular labels including YMCMB and Ama Kip Kip.

This is really a good development but the only problem is that no competitive local label is on the market to sell the country.

It is against this background that Mzati Garments was prompted to sign a deal with clothing line Young Malawian and Gifted (YMG), an inspirational youth movement that help in behaviour change as well as help the youth to have a burning desire for success.

In an interview with Nyasa Times, Mzati Garments marketing and sales manager Dennis Imaan said they decided to promote YMG as a label because of its uniqueness and purpose.

“We decided to promote YMG as a clothing label because of what they are doing in working with the youth to concentrate on issues that matter most in their daily lives and the name Young Malawian and Gifted sounds unique. It’s something that every Malawian can be proud to wear,” said Imaan.

“If we can wear foreign labels why not our own Malawian?” he questioned, while indicating that “to Mzati Garments, YMG was the ideal label for a company that aims to redefine people’s perspective towards locally made clothes.”

According to Imaan, a number of clothes have already been sampled and manufactured and are coming in the colours white, red, black as well as purple and in different styles to suit customer’s needs.

“Mostly we have manufactured T-Shirts including V-Shapes and women outfits as well. This brand will be available soon at affordable prices in all the top shops across the country,” he further disclosed.

“Some of them [shops] have already given us orders. This is the response we wanted and we are confident that people will be in love with the YMG label as it is already a popular youth movement.”

Different from other local labels, which usually purchase T-Shirts and do the screen printing, Mzati Garments proves to be genuine as all the clothes are made at their factory. They also go beyond screen printing as they do embroidery.

The company says it is using this brand to promote the country’s identity and as indicated by Imaan, it is in line with their bigger picture of promoting Malawi’s Tourism sector as they believe the brand will go all the way to sell Malawi as a tourism destination through partnerships they are getting into with reputable tourism groups.

Said he: “We  will be diversifying our products and services to help promote tourism in Malawi as well. Those who want their special designs are also welcome and we will do everything to suit their taste.”

In a separate interview, YMG founder, Kelvin Sulugwe, thanked Mzati Garments for taking an active role in promoting local brands.

“This is a very good development, that’s why when they approached us we didn’t hesitate because to us it’s one way of generating money so that we reach out to a number of young people across the country.

“For so long people have underestimated the youth, but as YMG we believe that as young people, we have the power and the potential. We must have the courage to change old ideas and practices to direct their power toward good ends. It is manners that make the fortune of the ambitious youth,” he said.

Appealing for support on the market, Sulugwe observed that for all such things to be accomplished, young people’s ideas and initiatives must be fully supported by everyone, both the young and the old.

“Buying this YMG brand is the first step towards achieving that. I believe if we define our true purpose as the youth, we will surely understand what we want with our lives and our country,” he said.

So far, another local brand that is also making headlines on the market is ‘Proud 2b Malawian’ and it mostly does T-Shirts.
