Dzuka Malawi: Malawians are feeling the pinch of a directionless economy
Malawians less than a year ago pinned their hopes on Tonse Alliance to deliver them from evil that was the DPP. The Tonse choir orchestrated by the Leader of Opposition Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and his number two Dr. Saulosi Chilima promised Malawians Canaan or Malawi okomela tonse.
June 23, 2021 seems already far enough, the President seems to have an excuse every time he must backtrack from his promises. Unfortunately for Malawians, they had enough excuses from Peter Mutharika, Joyce Banda, Bingu wa Mutharika and Bakili Muluzi.
Muluzi when asked about his promises for free shoes, he asked Malawians if he knew their sizes. He managed to build Keza, bought Lonrho House and a few million dollars were deposited into his personal account. He bought over 200 cars for anyone who cheered him, had more bare prime plots than individual Malawians.
After Muluzi one of the most beloved excuse was “they found Government coffers empty”. I think only Bingu did not give this excuse until his tribesmen convinced him power was to be restricted to the Lhomwe belt, punish Northerners for being nosy and make sure 65% of top public positions are filled with Lhomwes.
Imagine, President, Chief Justice and Clerk of Parliament were all Lhomwes. Head of Military, Police, Intelligence, MRA, Admarc, Teveta, Roads Authority, MERA, Nocma and many critical agencies had to be Lhomwes.
Joyce Banda claimed she found empty coffers after DPP had looted everything. But she managed to batter our presidential jet, rampaged a few million dollars, like Bingu and Muluzi before her, she managed to buy or register 115 vehicles from well-wishers. Cashgate became a public matter, Malawians were given all excuses, they opted for the devil that they knew.
Peter Mutharika’s favourite excuse was an empty cash gated treasury. He spoke all the right words but once he slept at Sanjika Palace his memory and words were contradictory. Suddenly he could not remember he promised Mombela University the whole six years, suddenly he could not remember to even attend debate where he had mocked Joyce Banda absence four years earlier.
Look here, Peter Mutharika was not probably the thieving President, but he was sleeping at Sanjika when Chisale was accumulating almost 200 vehicles, Mulhako was at its prime. He suddenly did not remember his promise to restore the senate and reduce presidential powers. He even showed a middle finger to Malawi’s strong rule of law for a legal professor- attempting to fire a Chief Justice, failing to implement access to information act and more importantly failed to reign in against corruption. Karma had it he got a cheque from Zameer Karim. Whether he really paid back or not, we will see.
President Lazarus Chakwera and his deputy Saulosi Chilima campaigned twice in 2019 and 2020. They told Malawians they had keys to propel them to a different life they only dream of. Peter Mutharika out of all his faults, he maintained a Cabinet of 20 for five years. Dr. Chakwera failed from the start.
Then came popular promises, excuses have been given I will not repeat them it’s not necessary. But the most worrying trend is when the President makes a public pronouncement and must give an excuse of not having done it. This continues to weaken his presidency.
Chakwera failed on Cabinet appointments – his prerogatives we are reminded by State House. It was a family and appeasement affair. He has failed to control the economy, the kwacha slipping, fuel and cost of living are all rising, and Malawians have no idea when Canaan will come.
Amid all this, K6.2 billion has vanished. The promises to relinquish power seem like a dream. The promise for Access to information seem like a dream and now even a promise of a cabinet from the Presidency seem like a dream.
The question is, are we heading for any right direction? A year is ending in the next 72 days also. I am not sure what we will be celebrating. President Chakwera spoke well at Magufuli’s funeral. Magufuli shook Tanzania and brought change days into office. Why is our President taking 294 days without showing Malawians were we are heading. The only thing we can pray is their next appointments will revitalize the country’s hope. Otherwise, the economy is biting the poor and businesses hard. It seems corruption is back and most cabinet members look useless and clueless. Police seem daft to silence critics and the biggest nonsense if Tonse Government trying to break Teachers Union. Those sound like UDF antics not a civilised and Malawi for all agenda.
Reverend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera please dzukani. Malawians are crying. Malawians are feeling the pinch of a directionless economy. Actually, we don’t even know if you can tell us where we are heading. Dr Chilima said he knew where Malawi money is and jobs will be there about a million by June 2021. Today companies are closing enmasse and job losses are a common feature.
After Magufuli’s speech, most of us hope we can at least do half of his works. Perhaps we can start dreaming.

Hahaha, don’t always ask what will the government do for me but rather ask, what shall I do for my beloved Malawi…John F. Kennedy at stake heeee,

Well articulated article chakwera is quickly failling Malawians at large he should at least do one promise he shouldn’t worry if other people call him dictator but he should do the right things
Muona Nyekwe ma supporters a Tonse Alliance. Fools! Were you not warned not to believe Lazalo and baby Chilima. Idyani tambala wakuda KKKKK

The most painful thing is when handclappers don’t see anything amiss!
I can’t believe we are in this mess. We don’t know where we are going, we have no hope for the future. Prices are skyrocketing, we no longer have potholes but drum holes. I can’t point a new thing by Tonse, neighbours are laughing at us and asking us “Is this the Canaan you were talking about?” Lord rescue us. We need you more than before.
Where in the world have you seen a former pastor being a successful president? Theologians should be left to deal with bibles. They are so clueless on the economy and governance. But Malawians, as clueless as usual, were fooled by a clueless pastor and a double tongued power hungry chilima.
Chakwera is a good man but he is not the right person for this kind of job that is right in front of him. In fact, it should have been the other way round. Chilima being the President and Chakwera his Vice. As it is, it will be difficult for the country to make that leap or seismic shift that this country requires at this moment. We have lagged behind for far too long and we are on the fringes of extreme poverty with this Covid pandemic. The point is we need the kind of leadership that thinks and works outside the box. That should be the norm. But unfortunately Chakwera will not be able to provide that kind of leadership. Nothing personal like I said. I like the Pastor so much unlike the President. The man is not cut out for this job. If Peter Mutharika was clueless, then Lazarus Chakwera is out of touch with his job. His priorities lie elsewhere. We should just be content with whom we have always been as a country. Real change is taking too long. In 3 years it will be 60 years after independence. Hell! That is a long time. If we compare ourselves with Singapore or Malaysia who were as a poor as we were then. We all agree that we have not been able to do a great job. Particularly, the Leadership has let us down. Where have we got it all wrong? Maybe we should try to answer that question.
Trusting m’busa to change/fix an economy is trusting someone with a job he has no clue about. U can’t trust a brick maker with buying jewels, thats rubbish! Even if u cry blood nothing will change! Malawians must reap wat they saw with their stupidity, tribalism&hatred. You only trust people with a job that they have knowledge about..your M’busa will just tell u convincing illusions typical of m’busaship. Shame! It’s not even a year already crying loud like this!?Malawians are dumb. Prebians of the world. Enjoy your choice&banana show
i dont think anything will improve with this government because they are busy stealing instead of running government. Malawians should wake up and rise against these thieves. The problem in Malawi is that we have a very stupid leader of opposition who seems to be celebrating when things are going wrong. As opposition they are given chance to ask questions to the president but the questions they ask leave a lot to be desired.
Very painful pinch.
Magufuli was a class apart! he needs no comparisons. Indeed LMC spoke well but it seems he loves speaking like he’s still in church. He’s forgetting rather he has forgotten that he’s running Government, not family siblings, that is Malawi, not a small church with a few thousands. This is a very different game! It is disturbing that they are saying alot without matching action. They are mocking the citizenry since they dont want to change their mind sets. We the citizens have enbraced change, why are they failing to do so?
Economists taught us that an economy in very few hands is worthless, whilsts an economy being driven by millions of empowered households creates more demand and increases National Income!
Im sure he’s been in the office long enough now to know what will make the economy tick.
Just do it or be another one hard unforgettable term president! It’s up to,,,,,,,,,

Chakwera tinabetsa . He is incompetent
Your are being kind on Chakwera. The man is complete failure and very greedy. He went into government specifically to get jobs for his unemployable inlaws like Kampondeni. These people have never worked anywhere and they find the trappings of state house appetising and they are very rude.
Chakwera has managed to form hia criminal enterprise in government where Chikhosi is busy employing retirees and unqualified people in key positions specifically to execute his criminal enterprise. Chakwera is like a pastor who is entrusted to council a couple but goes behind to sleep with the woman. Chakwera is a highly qualified liar and a specially trained crook. Trust him at your own risk. We have the Lord of gangster at statehouse
