Escom beat Tigers to extend unbeaten run

By Jeden Chilikunzako, Nyasa Times

The TNM Super League defending champions Escom extended their unbeaten run in four games in the 2011/12 TNM Super League with a 2 – 1 victory over struggling Azam Tigers in a mid week fixture at the Kamuzu stadium.

Goals from captain Noel Mkandawire and James Chilapondwa in each half consolidated Escom’s lead at the summit of the log table with 15 points from 5 games.

Unlike in most of their games where they had to come from behind to snatch victory, the electricians wasted little time in stamping their authority and scored first through Mkandawire’s powerful strike in the 17th minute.

Escom: More victory dances

Azam Tigers who came into this game searching for their first victory of the season offered little resistance to the high flying Escom and led by Mapopa Msukwa, they failed to outsmart Escom.

Tigers came a polished side in the second half and pushed forward with purpose with Charles Ngosi and Gerald Chimbaka leading the chase for an equaliser.

Against the run of play, Chilapondwa increased Escom’s advantage to 2 with a headed in goal from a corner kick. Tigers continued to press forward and pulled one back through Kondwani Lufeyo but it was not enough to save their day.

Coach for Escom Charles Manda applauded his boys for bagging maximum points but refused to be carried away with the team’s performance and says they will continue working hard.

“It’s a good result for us and a good start to the season but we won’t lose our focus of defending the title” he said.

Tigers Technical Advisor Robin Alufandika said there is a long way to go for his team but is optimistic that good results are coming.

It was double celebration for Escom United as sponsors TNM and the Super league of Malawi (SULOM) gave out the first player of the month award to the player of the moment Ndaziona Chatsalira.

Chatsalira got K15, 000 for shinning in the top flight league in the month of July.
