Escom in campaign to update customer database

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) says it is updating its customer database by capturing location coordinates of all meters as one way of improving service delivery.

Mituka: Data campaign

According to a press statement from Escom, the corporation has deployed its personnel to collect this information from each customer.

The activity, which is called Data Campaign, started last July and will run up to December this year.

“The exercise will help Escom to improve its service delivery in planning and designing a robust network grid as the number of meters attached to each transformer will be known,” reads the statement in part.

It further states that this process will help in minimizing time taken in tracing location of a customer with a fault or an outage.

“Escom personnel will be able to show transformers whose load exceeds the percentage specified and hence allow for scalability.”

Public Relation Officer for ESCOM George Mituka asked the general public to allow Escom personnel currently in the field to access their premises and show them the location of the meter using a hand-held device and nothing else.

“In case the customer is not available, they can leave behind their meter smart card, their Token device (customer interface unit) or a previous token receipt with someone responsible” Mituka said.

He added that customers shall recognize Escom personnel with their identity cards and official Escom introductory letters.

“Escom is therefore advising all customers to contact the corporation through the regional offices if there are any doubts,” Mituka said

According to Mituka, the exercise is yet to cover many areas but it is progressing well as planned and that many people are welcoming the idea bearing in mind the long term benefits.

The Data campaign is carried out under Escom Management Information System (EMIS) whose objective is to integrate all the corporation’s systems to enhance work coordination, efficiency and monitoring.
