Ex-army general clings to official house
Former Malawi Defence Force commander Mark Chiziko, is still occupying an official residence for the commander, months after being out of his job, Nyasa Times can reveal.
According to Nyasa Times military sources, Chiziko requested President Bingu wa Mutharika, who is Commander-in-Chief, to continue residing in the house since he has no private residence.
“He requested that he stayed in the house a little longer to allow him buy or built a house outside the barracks,” a source said. “It is believed that he does not own a house of his status.”
The development has placed the newly appointed army Commander General Odilo in awkward position whereby he is still accommodating in a house befitting a Brigadier General, a property he was staying before being appointed Commander.
“This is strange, it has never happened unless when a commander has died like the case of late General Maulana or late General Chigawa the wife is allowed to stay three months then vacates the house but in this case he was supposed to live immediately he was out of the post,” revealed the source.
In a related development former deputy commander Lieutenant General Ernest Ntonya is still operating in his office as he has not yet received official communication from State House despite an announcement of the appointment of a new deputy commander.
Nyasa Times could not establish if it meant that the army had two deputies or not.
