Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has disowned a new kit design that has been circulating on social media saying it is fake.
FAM commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola said the design is a mockery to what they are currently working on after severing ties with UK sports gear Umbro in November last year.
“FAM has learnt with great surprise and concern that some unscrupulous individuals are circulating a fake design of Malawi national team uniform. Our position is that Malawians should treat the matter as social media gossip and fake news,” Matola said.
“For now we feel duty bound to clarify that the purported Malawi national team kit design making rounds on social media is nowhere close to what we are currently working on.”
FAM has since appealed to the soccer fraternity not to take it seriously as the association would make a formal official communication.
“We therefore advise Malawians to simply ignore it,” he said. At an appropriate time we shall unveil the new and authentic Malawi national team kit using our formal and official communication platforms.
FAM and Umbro parted ways after a three-year contract after the deal flopped as the association struggled to sell 10,000 replica jerseys during the period.
This deal followed Puma and Adidas which did not yield the much needed results.
