Fake police officer arrested

A 34-year-old man married to a police officer is expected to appear before the magistrate court in Kasungu to answer a charge of impersonating as  Commissioner of Police.

Steve Banda from Malango village, TA Chadza in Lilongwe was arrested last week by community policing members at Mphomwa Trading Centre in the district where he impersonated a senior police officer.

Kasungu Police Public Relations Officer Edwin Kaunda said the accused confidently stormed the area where he deceived people that he was a police officer on a mission to confiscate fuel that was being sold on black market.

“The suspect told the people that he was Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police John Nyondo of Kasungu Police Station but some members of community policing in the area became suspicious with him because they personally know the person he was referring to,” explained Kaunda.

Kaunda said when the man was asked to show the people his identity card, he produced one that had particulars of a female police officer based in Lilongwe.

Upon being interrogated, the impostor revealed that the female police officer on the ID was his wife.

The police PRO could, however, not reveal what the office will do to their officer for her husband’s criminality.

The man is reported to have a walkie-talkie for radio message.
