FDH Bank hacked: Malawi prominent customers data breached

FDH Bank, which is on a path to list on the 14-counter Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE) by June 2020, has had its customers data breached by hackers, Nyasa Times understands.

According to information which Nyasa Times has got , hackers has attacked the FDH Bank system.

Nyasa Times has seen all the system data, customer data  and email conversations between the hacker  and FDH bank.

The details of account holders, their contacts details and transactions including the account of the Office of the State Vice President have also been seen by Nyasa Times.

Nyasa Times contacted Head of IT at FDH Bank, Ganizani Phiri , whose correspondence with the hackers we have seen for his comment.

Phiri promised to comment on the inquiry from Nyasa Times and promised to revert with information.

“I will need to get more information,” Phiri said.

He later asked Nyasa Times to  “share the information” which it has in possession “so that we can verify  if it is indeed ours. Then we will comment quickly.”

The information was shared but FDH Bank has not yet commented.

In 2015, FDH Financial Holdings, the parent company of FDH Bank, bought an 80 percent stake in the then Malawi Government wholly-owned Malawi Savings Bank (MSB), which included five percent for the bank’s employees.

In 2017,  FDH Bank board approved the disposal of investment in MSB Properties Holdings Limited, which owned MSB Properties Limited to FDH Money Bureau Limited.

This was part of FDH Bank reorganisation to optimise the bank’s capital structure, according to the bank.

  1. Let’s appreciate our fellow Malawians effort to start a robust business like a bank. Systems do fail and get restored. Enanu olo okala mukukanika kutsegula

  2. Works of an amateur hacker… by maintaining conversation with the data owner / processors (FDH Bank), it is easy to for the hacker to leave footprint and eventually be traced. But I can guarantee, FDH don’t have good IT forensic experts.. So this issue will go away.

This kind of data breach requires government intervention:

1- Impose fines on FDH for leaving the system insecure
2 – As a response, FDH need to inform each and every customer affected and the possible impact on them
3 – FDH needs to inform the government and customers what remedial measures they have put in.

Knowing poor governance in Malawi, this issue will go away and no one will be taken to account. Malawi stinks.

  3. Wake up malawians , check all asians and you will see that none of them have got loyalty towards the country. All those you see have aquired their illgotten wealth by robbing your assets. These criminals have corrupted your leaders and have siphoned all your wealth out of your country and have deposited it in uk and rest of the world. All that aid and foreign exchange come to you is taken away by these greedy people. Wake up get these people out before you end up bankrupt.

    1. Firstly this is not the issue being discussed on this article.

I understand your frustration and anger when the Africans have already woken up a decade ago .

I don’t know what colonizing nation you represent but I hope your not a European.

But since your dragged it in let’s start with loyalty. This is a fundamental issue that starts from home. You first have to clean the mess in your house before you go clean other peoples mess or even complain about others mess .In short words when a whole government and public (not all civilians) doesn’t show loyalty to the nation firstly why should others? Not saying foreigners aren’t patriotic but just some food for thought.

Regarding corruption the whole country reeks of it you can smell it in every corner . Are you trying to say corruption doesn’t exist in first world countries?

Siphoning money is being done by all races in the country indigenous are hiding it in South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Asians in Uk and THE rest of the world like you say and the whites well mainly siphoning it to GREECE as I say.

As for the part of being Bankrupt we have long passed being Bankrupt . We are currently brokerupt as hell.

This is the trick of the once upon a time master throw dust in the eyes make others scapegoats while the illusion is being done with slight of hand. Ask DR Arikana Chihombori Quao why she got fired? https://youtu.be/6rNge1Tdbpo

Please feel free to reply while I Enjoy my retreat on my Greek beach.

        1. Unfortunately it is this mentality, prejudice and hatred that Malawi shall remain in the Dark ages.

You see when for example if a tree had Cancer you wouldn’t just chop of a branch and expect it not to spread to the rest of the tree. The whole tree in this case the system from top to bottom is infected ,you simply have to chop the whole tree down and uproot it. Plant a new tree if you want to reset and restart with a blank canvas.

But since the learned people know and understand that it’s not possible ,it’s business as usual as was said by one MUNTHU (person) speaker of parliament.

Why call out one devil at a time ? A devil calling out another devil will not resolve issues . A devil hiding its evil by scapegoating others is that dust being thrown in your eyes the whites call it magic dust.

I say line all the devil’s out ,be it white, black, asian ,colored ,Chinese ,gay ,bisexual ,transgender , straight ,big ,small ,tall ,short , one legged ,one eyed let thy kingdom come and that day shall be judgement day for all till then don’t trying being a wicked Devil by being too big for your boots.

  4. So nyasatimes are you not going to share with us your esteemed readers the information you have?

Anyway, FDH is a good bank. But it just doesn’t vibe with me, even its interiors…ugh.

  5. They should immediately consult Suleiman for assistance. He is well conversant with Bank Systems. At one point he assisted NBS Bank.
