Fearing Section 65, UDF MP reverses his earlier decision to turn himself into an Independent MP
Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota South Constituency, Ibrahim Sadala, has reversed his decision to leave the United Democratic Front – UDF and become an independent legislator, after the party wrote Speaker of Parliament last month asking her to declare his seat vacant, in line with section 65 subsection 1 of the country’s constitution.
In a letter we have seen, United Democratic Front Secretary General, Kandi Padambo, asked the speaker to take the move, for a by election to be conducted, arguing that the decision by the MP meant that he had crossed the floor which is against the legal provision.
But Padambo and Sadala himself, say the legislator has now reversed the decision.
Meanwhile, a political analyst Ernest Thindwa, says implementation of section 65 subsection 1 of the constitution requires political will to be effective.
“We will need some significant reforms in our governance institutions one of which is to disperse some powers so that not everything should be left to the elected, other institutions like constitutional bodies could be empowered in some way”, he said.
