The first lady of Malawi, Gertrude Mutharika has been awarded a honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Management from the University of Malawi .
Madam Mutharika, a nurse by profession, is portrayed as the loving wife, supporting the father of the nation, President Peter Mutharika.
She has been awarded with an honorary doctorate degree in Environmental Management by Polytechnic college , a constituent of the University of Malawi.
Mrs Mutharika was being awarded for her Beautify Malawi Trust project and that the university recognised her “ tremendous job” .
The new Dr Gertdude Mutharika’s CV already includes improving the environment of the country through BEAM.
BEAM is an initiative set up by the first lady which aims to encourage Malawians to take care of the environment.
Meanwhile, President Mutharika has congratulated his wife.
” I urge her and fellow Malawians to continue supporting the noble work of preserving our environment and natural resources, through the Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM) and other initiatives so that we improve the health and safety of our surroundings,” President Mutharika said in a message on social media.
BEAM office said people should not view her doctorate degree in a politically-tinted view, saying its an academic degree as nobody awards themselves a degree.
