A standard 1 pupil at Mchedwa Primary School was on Monday found dead at Likuni location in Lilongwe.
Confirming the incident to Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Tuesday, Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula said five year old Emmanuel Gondwe went missing from the house on Wednesday, December 14, 2016.
“The boy was waiting for food outside the gate of his parents’ house at Likuni and when the food was ready, his relative went outside to call him but he was nowhere to be found.
“The matter was reported to police who had been carrying out investigations to find the missing boy until Monday December 19, 2016 at around 17:00 hours when members of the general public found the boy in a decomposed state in an empty wall fenced plot at Likuni location in Lilongwe,” Dandaula said.
The Police Spokesperson said postmortem conducted at the Kamuzu Central Hospital revealed that death was due to strangulation.
Dandaula said investigations are still underway to apprehend the perpetrators and he is appealing to members of the general public who may have any information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to inform the nearest police station.
The police are further advising parents and guardians to be watchful of their children during the festive season and at all times.
The deceased boy hailed from Chilongozi village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi district.
