FMB donates K1.2m to Malawi Hockey Association

First Merchant Bank (FMB) HAAS donated K1.2 million to  Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham)  as sponsorship for Eleven-A-Side and Six-A-Side leagues in the Southern Region.

HAM president Tochi Gill applauded FMB for the donation, disclosing that the competition will kick off next week and will have the men’s and the ladies’ categories.

He said the Eleven-A-Side League will take 60 percent of the sponsorship while the Six-A-Side league will use the 40 percent.

The games will be conducted at Blantyre Sports Club and Country Club Limbe.

According to Gill, the champions will qualify for the African Club Championships in either Egypt or Kenya in November.

“We are overjoyed with the sponsorship because we have been talking to FMB for the past four years,” Gill said.

“This sponsorship will boost hockey because we have a few sponsors for both our competitions and projects.”

Gill assured that the association would do everything possible to promote the tournaments to be sponsored by FMB.

FMB General Manager Lucas Kondowe said the donation was in line with the bank’s policy of giving back to the society.

“We decided to include hockey into a portfolio of sporting disciplines that we sponsor such as cricket, golf, football and rugby to promote the sport,” Kondowe said.

“We felt that hockey which used to be one of the popular sports in the country has been overlooked.”

But he did not state whether the sponsorship was a-one off donation or not.

Also present at the function were HAM general secretary Krishna Achuthan and executive member Duncan Gumbi.
