Nyamilandu said the resignation was inevitable with the mounting pressure over money laundering, corruption and bribes dogging the association.

“It’s shocking but not surprising. That was the honourable thing to do under the circumstances. It was only a matter of time. We welcomed his resignation for the good of the game. Otherwise the image of football was at stake. It’s only the way to restore the image and trust of Fifa.

But the FAM boss saluted Blatter for championing development projects under Goal Project initiative among member associations including Malawi.

“We will fondly remember him for the development agenda he did for Africa and Malawi in particular. The goal projects at Chiwembe Technical and Development Centre in Mzuzu are credited to his leadership.

He also allayed fears that the Goal Four and Five Projects which were approved would be affected.

“We are I completion phase. All the contracts were signed and sealed, he said. These are ongoing projects that Fifa is committed to.

He said Fam would meet to discuss Blatter’s resignation and scrutinize potential candidates before determining on who to support ahead of an extraordinary Fifa congress to elect a new president.

The boss also declined to comment on the candidate the association elected saying “It remains a secret ballot.”
