Four die, two injured in taxi accident

Four people died on the spot on Friday evening and two others are nursing serious injuries at Rumphi District Hospital after a taxi they were travelling in overturned due to over speeding.

Mzuzu Police Station Spokesperson Edward Longwe confirmed the development to Nyasa Times saying the accident happened at Luwazi Bridge on the Mzuzu to Rumphi road.

Longwe said the vehicle, a Toyota Ipsum station wagon registration number CP 3020, was heading towards Enukweni Trading centre and had five passengers on board.

“When the driver reached Luwazi Bridge, he lost control and the vehicle swerved and hit concrete pillars before overturning,” he said.

According to Police those that died on the spot including the driver are: Philemon Nyirenda, 24, of Bondera village, Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande, Mzimba district, Lameck Harawa, 47, of Myochi Harawa village, Traditional Authority Jalavikuwa, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, 23, of Chadamba village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo and Martha Kumwenda, 7, of Zigodo village Traditional Authority Mtwalo, all in Mzimba district.

While the injured are, Alice Dzimbiri, 25, of Philemon Kumwenda village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo and Lewis Nyasulu, 14, of Zota village in Mzimba district.

Meanwhile, Longwe said the Police wish to remind all road users to observe traffic regulations and avoid the thrill of over speeding.
