Girl critical with rabies in Chitipa: No anti rabies drugs at the hospital, parents to sue  over negligence

A 12 year old girl Joyce Msukwa is battling for her life at home after being affected by rabies disease in Chitipa district.

Chitipa District Hospital: No drugs
According to the father of the child Stamy Msukwa, this comes after the girl was bitten by a dog with rabbies in April this year while chatting with friends.
The father said he took the child to Chitipa district hospital soon after she was  bitten by the dog but the doctors told him that the child was fine.
Apart from that, the doctors failed to provide drugs to the child claiming the hospital has no ant rabies drugs.
“I was not satisfied with the doctor’s remarks and I took my child to Karonga hospital, unfortunately, they also had the same problem of no anti rabies drugs. I took the child to Chitipa hospital again for checkup but the doctors told me that the girl was just fine,” he explained.
However, Msukwa said the child has been suffering from malaria since the development which was unusual and the doctors have been given her malaria drugs.
In July, Msukwa said he was surprised to see the child’s leg (which was bitten by the dog) swollen and he took her to Chitipa hospital where the doctors said it was rabies disease.
“The doctors said the girl is affected by rabies disease and that they have nothing to assist,” he said.
Some medical personnel at the hospital confirmed the development to Nyasa Times saying “it was not negligence, but we had no any choice as the hospital has no drugs.”
According to them, the condition the child has reached “critical” claiming the disease is incurable.
Meanwhile, Msukwa has threatened to take legal action against the Chitipa health officials for negligence.
He then asked for any help from the well wishers in order to save the life of the child as he has no where to take the child to.

This is it…Malawi after 53 years of independence. We still cannot afford the basics. The statistics I got on rabies in Malawi are shocking. In Blantyre alone, 60 people are bitten by dogs every month. Countrywide, 30% of the people are connected to someone who is battling rabies. 90% per cent of rabies patients die and usually attributed to some causes rather than rabies so the problem is suppressed. We have no functional laws that protect humans from vicious dogs in the country. People keep dogs at will and no one checks whether they are vaccinated or not. No penalties… Read more »
