Malawi  Government has failed to phase out on spot fines for traffic offences, failing to beat the March 1 deadline it set.

Angellina Makweche, spokesperson for Road Traffic and Safety Services department said the department failed to meet the deadline because of some challenges.

“We met some challenges which we are fixing so we will abolish the on spot fines once we have rectified the problems, which should be this year,” she said.

Makweche however said the department has now rolled out the electronic law enforcement. Through this method, traffic offenders pay fines through the NBS Bank.

“We are training police officers on how to use the gadgets,” she said.

She said the electronic law enforcement mode of payment for traffic fines has completely been rolled out in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Zomba and will run in parallel with the on spot fine payment method.

This is part of reforms the department has embarked on.
