Gwanda to contest in 2014, bitter with ‘dying’ opposition

Old time politician Gwanda Chakuamba  has come out of his cocoon and declared that he will contest as presidential candidate in 2014 elections because President Joyce Banda’s administration is “killing the opposition.”

Chakuamba, a sworn political enemy of opposition leader John Tembo, also accused the latter of allowing Banda to kill the opposition by declaring that there is nothing the opposition can blame government for.

“Where do you see the opposition saying there is nothing to criticize government for? “ wondered Chakuamba.

“Go and tell the nation that Gwanda Chakuamba will stand in 2014,” he announced his candidacy.

Chakuamba: Count me in the race

“ I am ready for  the battle. I do not need campaigning ; the country knows me; I have sold this name for 50 years,” said Chakumba.

He said the ongoing defections of MPs to Peoples Party of President Banda is a threat to democracy and a sign of danger coming ahead.

“Should we really be supporting government on every decision and every day? Not me. For example, those who are saying there is nothing to criticize or oppose government for, are they supporting the gay issue as well?. Not me. I am declaring that I will stand in the elections,” he said.

But Chakuamba said he was generally impressed with the current administration because the President is removing all the mess the DPP government brought but that the real work has not yet begun to warrant praising government.

Chakuamba was presidential candidate in 2004 elections for Mgwirizano coalition and he claimed  that he won but government rigged the elections and paved way for the late Bingu wa Mutharika under UDF ticket.
