Gwengwe condemns ‘cashgate politics’

The ruling Peoples Party (PP) presidential running mate for the May tripartite elections Sosten Gwengwe has condemned politics of appeasement and self-enrichment as detrimental to development.

Speaking this weekend to traditional leaders and civil servants at St. Denis hall in Rumphi, Gwengwe said politics is a vehicle to development and must not be abused by greedy and selfish individuals.

“The noble duty of a politician is to serve his constituents and nothing else; the tendency of joining politics to make money is failing our country.

“We need politicians who can serve the people and save the nation from poverty and hunger,” he said.

Gwengwe, who is also minister of Trade and Industry blamed regionalism and tribalism as thorns to unity and development.

He said it is time for transformational leadership, time to steer Malawi to prosperity as one nation.

This was Gwengwe’s first official visit to Rumphi since being made Joyce Banda’s running mate for the coming elections.
