Gwengwe urges students to take up sports to develop talent

Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works and director of Alice Gwengwe Foundation Girls School, Sosten Gwengwe has urged students at the institution to take sports seriously to develop talent and character.

Gwengwe said apart from academic schoolwork designed to test aptitudes and develop other skills crucial for success in future careers and life in general, sports can also play a major role in honing their talents and improving their character.

He said during a netball friendly match involving his school and Chitowo Community Day Secondary School which took place at Alice Gwengwe Secondary School. The home side won 18 baskets to 1.

The Alice Gwengwe team showcased golden talent in Singo Kumwenda. –  no any relationship with Malawi Queens’s evergreen shooter Mwayi Kumwenda.

Kumwenda told Nyasa Times that her aim is to play one of the biggest clubs in the country.

“My ambition is also to play for one of the biggest clubs in the country like Escom Sisters or Bingu Tigresses  or may be Malawi Queens as well, who knows it is a matter of working hard,” said Kumwenda.

Other netballers on the part of Alice Gwengwe, who were a marvel to watch, were Patricia Chatsika, Thocco Msiska, Sithembire Phiri, Melina Dalimeni, Angella Sifa and Karen Kansichi.

Gwengwe stressed that sports was important to the youth.

He said physical fitness would help them to learn and practice discipline, decision making, planning, coordination, cooperation and teamwork as well as build leadership qualities.

“Sports is important and l want to urge all of you to take part in different sporting activities” said Gwengwe.

The Director also urges the sports master at the school to introduce different sporting activities like tennis.

The Boarding Master for the school Douglas Issa, who is also a Women’s Football team coach for the school said that they have a pool of talented players and they can be a nursing ground for the national team.

Alice Gwengwe Foundation was established in 2007 and it is located in Dedza District along the Lilongwe-Blantyre M1 Road.
