Heavy rains cause havoc in Malawi

A life has been lost in Malawi central district of Kasungu while many others have been left homeless in other parts of the country following a heavy storm that hit some parts of the country Thursday, October 29, 2015.

Kasungu National Park An Investigation Officer Edson Chitali has confirmed that Sydney Mkungula, who was working as a driver at the Park died due to loss of blood after a roof of a house he was staying in collapsed on him due to the heavy storm.

Nyas Times understands that the storm has also left over 20 families in the district destitute as their houses, food and property has been destroyed.

In the Northern district of Mzimba reports reaching Nyasa Times show that at least 20 people have been injured while over 50 houses destroyed, and the hailstorm has not spared government institutions.

Some of the affected infrastructure is Kafukula Police Unit, Kafukula Secondary School and Kafukula Clinic, both the Ward Councillor Tobias Mvula and Mbelwa District Council Disaster Manager Thom Munthali have confirmed, adding that the families are in dire need of immediate assistance.

Unconfirmed reports say that in Thyolo, office of the Head Teacher and school blocks at Mphedzu have also been destroyed.

Some parts of the country experienced heavy rains on Thursday while others like Blantyre had heavy rains on Friday.

  3. In Mzimba the affected area is Kafukule (not Kafukula as reported here). Many more households and institutional property have been damaged. We hope the Government will soon come up with help.
