Dr. Delia Mabedi, President of the Society of Anesthesiologists in Malawi and Chief Anesthesiologist at Zomba Central Hospital,

This significant event aims to bolster the field of anaesthesia, preoperative care, pain management, and intensive care in the region.

The conference, themed “Strengthening Anaesthesia Education, Workforce, and Well-being in Africa,” will provide a platform for healthcare professionals to network, share knowledge, and explore the latest advancements in their field.

The event will also coincide with the CANESCA fellowship exam, celebrating the achievements of graduating fellows.

Dr. Delia Mabedi, President of the Society of Anaesthesiologists in Malawi and Chief Anaesthesiologist at Zomba Central Hospital, emphasized the vital role of anaesthetists in Malawi’s healthcare system.

She highlighted their contributions to safe surgery, pain management, maternal and child health, and policy development.

“We are also vital in contributing towards improving the maternal and child health indicators. Anaesthesiologists have also contributed to different health policies. They have sat at different boards and have worked with government in several roles,” explained Dr Mabedi.

The establishment of the first school of anaesthesia in Malawi in 1989, founded by Professor Paul M. Fenton, marked a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare infrastructure. Since then, anaesthetists have played a crucial role in improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of medicine.

As Malawi prepares to host this prestigious conference, it is poised to showcase its progress in anaesthesia and contribute to the broader development of healthcare in East, Central, and Southern Africa.
