I’m sorry for my careless remarks, MCP’s Kusamba Dzonzi tells North Malawi

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) financial spokesperson in Parliament, Alexander Kusamba Dzonzi has apologised for his controversial remarks he made towards people of the Northern Region.

Kusamba-Dzonzi: My sincere apologies

While responding to the Mid-Term Budget Statement, Kusamba Dzonzi accused Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe of allocating more water projects in the North, where he said there are ‘just few people’ than  Lilongwe, Kasungu or Thyolo.

The remarks irked members of Parliament from the region and former vice president Khumbo Kachali who is Mzimva South West MP addressed  a news conference to condemn Dzonzi’s remarks as nepotism.

Kachali  said: “ I would like to condemn in strongest terms portions of the  response by MCP through Kusamba Dzonzi.”

Transport Minister Jappie Mhango earlier also condemned  Dzonzi’s remarks,  saying they were a confirmation that MCP has not changed.

Mhango, who is also national campaign director for ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), said the remarks remind people of the North the atrocities that MCP committed during its 31-year rule.

He further claimed that MCP does not want to see any development in the North, which he said was sad.

Kusamba Dzonzi’s pronouncements forced MCP president Lazarus Chakwera to ask the Speaker to exclude the remarks from the Hansard and not form part of the the parliamentary record, saying they were not views of MCP.

Meanwhile, Dzonzi told the House that he is sorry for his carelees remarks and asked for forgiveness.

“I would like to extend my apologies to all in the  North for the sentiment I made when I was responding to the Mid-Year Budget Review Statement,” said Dzonzi.

“My statement was careless and please receive my sincere apologies,” he added.

He elaborated that he was only trying to plead with Gondwe to consider all regions equally, arguing that what mattered was interpretation.

The controversial statement was duly taken out of the Hansard.

  1. “I’m sorry for my careless remarks, you are educated for nothing Mr, i can see that you are biting your finger;
Alexander Kusamba Dzonzi , you have to be very careful if you want to say something.

  2. The Honorable Kachali says that the Honorable Dzonzi’s remarks constitute nepotism. Perhaps he means teapotism. Kikikiki

  3. Thank you Kusamba Dzonzi, very wise not the useless unwise Khumbo who instead of dealing with matter in parliament when it started he decided to go on MBC TV and radio to respond to an issue which could have best be handled by the speaker in parliament through a point of order.

  4. Kusamba’s remarks are very retrogressive; Nevertheless we are still geared at voting for the lesser devil

  5. I’m from the north and I am not happy with Dzonzi said about the north if indeed He mentioned the North in his statement but at the same time I do not want the DPP members to take advantage of this and use it as their campaigning tool against the MCP for several reasons, 1st – DPP has completely done nothing here in the north except the Killing of young demonstrators and empty promises compared to MCP. There are several development that MCP can point at here in the north compared to DPP. MCP took government from the grass root and what ever DPP is using now was mostly done by MCP. 2nd – most issue of sidelining the north are being done by DPP one being that of quota system, selection of people in big positions in government and government parastators
Therefore Jappie should not fool himself thinking that the North will believe him. MCP is better than DPP, the killing machine of demonstrators and university students. Masters of quota system and corruption. MCP is full of new blood while DPP is full of old blood associated with the old MCP. The other thing is I doubt if Khumbo is indeed hurt by what Dzonzi said or He is just trying to align himself to DPP so he can also get a share of the stolen tax payers money the DPP is splashing. I’m wondering why Khumbo has taken this seriously while DPP members of parliament have said and done alot against the North but He has never come forward to condemn such.

  6. I salute you brother. DPP sikanatha kupepesatu…ask Jefure Wa Jefure she refused to do the apology.

I am the great son of the North ndipo we salute you Hon

  7. Please count how many negative remarks has DPP made or done toward the North. I will just highlight few of them: Chaponda plainly said that they can do without northerners; Jefrey wa Jefrey also at the public crashed that there is only Jappie Mhango who is being counted as a counterpart to work with DPP enawo useless heads; Mpinganjira vowed not to work with northerners better to work with a dog, meaning that a dog is better off than a northerner. Quota System has done more harm to the north than On merit selection. Then you wonder why the public universities of Malawi do not appear on the best 100 universities in Malawi while your policies allow it. We know you DPP funded the news conference to decampaign MCP. A Khumbo Kachali, a Jappie, a Obama ndi anzanu mukuteta mwalemba mumaji. Ndalama izo muli kupokela lyani mwamutende but you should know North is behind MCP. Ndalama izo pala DPP ikumupani lyani chifukwa muzamupangila chitukuko kwithu kuno chitani makola ma conference yawo awo. Kudera wanthu waphalirani unenesko. Tasuzgika mukaya muno

  8. There is more that unites than what divides us. Some of you commentators have criticised Donald Trump for his decision to build border wall with Mexico. This is exactly the kind of thinking being displayed by most of you Malawians. We are all Malawians; the tribes and family names signify our heritage of Malawi (Malawians). All the people that you meet in your everyday life are Malawians. It is therefore a waste of time and energy to box your own people into tribes or family names. Let’s build a country united by its one heritage as we head towards a global village. Tribal lines are so shallow, backwards, unAfrican and unMalawian. Let’s not support and perpetuate ignorance to our young children lest they laugh at us. This is 21st century heading towards the 4th industrial Revolution where the artificial borders will be broken down as the world gets more and more interconnected. Let’s embrace oneness as opposed to promoting “the others”. It will only breed unnecessary hatred.

  9. DZONZI SHOULD LEARN TO TAME HIS TONGUE AND ALWAYS LOOK AT THE LARGER PICTURE BEFORE UTTERING STATEMENTS.

  10. I m from the north and I will vote MCP this statement has change nothing in those who support MCP, it has only given you in DPP what to say. it is like the what the MP from mangochi said about alomwe destroying malo in mangochi. Othes feel what she said is true

  11. When I see the crop of politicians we have nowadays it gives alot of question of how they projected on their careers? They made too many mistakes from their mouth. But sometimes come back myself that invests too much on tribalism and regionalism because if it was policy articulatation and integrity and displine they could have no chance

  12. Most Malawians from the north live the cities of Blantyre and Ļilongwe. This is where water and other services require more money than the north. That is natural justice. There is no need for this MP to apologise. The point here is that the northerners are very selfish people. Why should government spend more money in the when people from the same north are drinking contaminated water in area 18. As far as I am concerned this country would be a better place without these Tumbukas. Please let them have their own country in the north.

    1. Midyombas and Lomwes are very pathetic people, lazy and depend on central and northern region for feeding. The percentage of illiteracy in them is well above 90% yet ndiomwe aswana kwambiri in Malawi but they dont contribute to Malawi’s GDP. Foolishness!!!! Malawi ikuyendetsedwa ndi northerners (as evidenced by both civil service and NGOs) where they are the majority of them…Central region feeds Malawi, kummwera what do you contribute? Utelala????? Nonsense ukufuna unene chani iwe? Malawi would have been more developed without southern region…. what you know is kuswana basi. Kanchenga you are cursed…..ufa ndi nsanje while northerners still triumph. Quota was developed because the cream of north was full in all universities….go fuck ur mother

      1. Anyamata owuzilidwa mayeso pa Mzuzu Corner ati aoneke ngati anzeru. You say you are very ejuquated. This is a matter of mathematical statistical and calculations. If 3 people out of ten are deemed educated. this represents 30%. Now if 20 out of 100 people are deemed educated, this represents 20%. So don’t think that there are no educated people in other regions. There are there but it’s a matter of dilution factor.

      2. Honestly there is nothing in the north worthy feeling nsanje about. Look around you with all the education you claim to have what have you people achieved in the north. Completely nothing. You have everything upside down. Chikangawa is gone, the airport is gone Mzuzu can’t even grow. Coal is shipped to the center and South while you are watching. Your moth piece AFFORD died way back. You are a pathetic people. You qual among yourselves shamelessly. A people trained to work in offices saving the centre and South as administrators, clerks, messengers.
Second class citizens in your own country. Kamuzu used you. Even illiterate Muluzu used, Bingu used you. Everybody can turn you around with so much ease.

  13. Dzozi sanapepese. Read carefully the so called apology. Kwaiyeyo akuti “what matters is the interpretation” which means those people from the north that find the remark offensive shauri Yao. Hon Dzonzi stands by his remark as he said earlier.

  14. People from the north, please do not believe this so called apology. Why has he taken ages to apologize? It is on record that he emphatically said that he stood by what he said.
Chakwera was embarrassed because Kusamba Dzozi anaulula za Ku dambwe. He publicized MCP policy towards the people of the north prematurely, otherwise what he said was what Chakwera has been confiding in him.
Mr Speaker, do not listen to what Chakwera is requesting. Let Dzozi’s remarks remain in the Hansard if his window dressing apology is to have relevance. If the remark is removed from the Hansard then the purported apology must not form part of the Hansard as well because anyone reading the the window dressing reversal journal entry ( purported apology) should know what was being reversed.
A Chakwerawa apepesa liti zofuna kumuchotsa Msowoya pofuna kusonyeza udani wao ndi anthu a kumpoto?

  15. Malawi needs a federal system of government if at all she is to develop. People in the North can better decide and foster development in their region and so can the people of the centre and the south. Kusamba’s remarks are not a careless but a realistic perception of people from people of other regions on other regions. Iron sharpens iron

    1. Now you see reason when these people from north were requesting for federal system of government? Myopic minds that lomwes have…..Northerners are fast thinkers, amaona patali that is what i admire most in them.

  16. Great statesman corrects his mistakes. I applaud Hon Dzonzi humility heals grievance we people from the North we are thankful for that.

    1. All is supposed to be forgotten. He should not have made the statement to start with. He also said he said it with his party’s blessing and his presidents blessing, and you are applauding him?

Sometimes it helps to just not say anything.

    2. You are not from the north. Who are you trying to cheat. What this man said just exposed that the MCP is a wolf on a sheep’s skin. We may end up replacing DPP with jackle which will end up haunting us. I am scared.
